Pacific Crest 1/2 Ironman - Triathlon1/2 Ironman

View Member's Race Log
Sunriver, OR
United States
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 4h 55m 58s
Overall Rank = 18/561
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 6/93
Pre-race routine:

From Motel 6 in Bend, OR, Sandy, Linda, Robert, Isaac, and myself drove to Starbucks for a coffee stop and then to T2 to drop off shoes, gel, and race number. We then drove to Lake Wickiup.

I pumped up my tires and laid out T1.
Event warmup:

I test drove my bike to make sure everything was in order. By 8:30, I had my wetsuit on and was in the lake.
Swim
  • 40m 30s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was a little disappointed in the swim. My goal was to swim it in 35 min. I was alot more comfortable in this OW swim than my first on in Eugene in May.
What would you do differently?:

I need to become a better navigator and learn to site better. In my opinion, that was my biggest problem.
Transition 1
  • 03m 8s
Comments:

I was very dizzy while trying to pull off the suit. Everything else went fine.
What would you do differently?:

Just be faster!
Bike
  • 2h 34m 13s
  • 58 miles
  • 22.57 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a good ride and beat many Elite riders. My stomach muscles cramped up after about 15 miles and then went away for awhile.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe I should have backed off a bit on the descent into Sunriver to get my legs ready for the run. I was having too much fun passing people.
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Better transition than T1.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 1h 36m 39s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Tough, Tough, Tough! I came off the bike and hit a 6:15 mile and felt OK and then my gluts tightened up and my stomach muscles cramped. I layed down on the course and tried to stretch with no success. I stopped every few minutes until I met up with a runner and tried to go with him. He was friendly and we talked, which helped get my mind off the pain. At mile 6 my gluts felt better, but my stomach cramps were killing me. My new friend took off and I jogged with pain until the finish. This was probably my toughest run in my life.

I was coming in thinking the running leg would be as strong as my bike, but not today.
What would you do differently?:

I need to find out what is causing the muscles to cramp.
Post race
Warm down:

None

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1. Stomach muscle cramps
2. Gluts cramping
3. Poor navigation during the swim
4. Experience in all areas

Event comments:

I'm already thinking about next year. I probably overtrained for this event.

Wow...you did excellent...you smoked it on the bike...coming in 7th overall on the bike...average over 22.5 mph....even with cramps you were fast on the run.

Amazing...great job...thanks for sharing your RR.

Good job on the race!

Just a thought on the run problems, I'm wondering if you were doing anything for electrolyte replacement.  I'm not saying that this was necessarily the issue, but I used to get really bad stomach pain and when I started focusing on taking some sort of electrolyte replacement faithfully, all of that magically went away.

Example: Sprint triathlon, was unable to eat any of the post-race food (except for a couple of orange slices due to stomach) - same race next year, took electrolytes and stomach felt fine all the way through, ate everything in sight at the end

Good job.  Did you figure out why you were dizzy in T1?  I've read that going from the horizontal swim position to upright can cause a brief period of adjustment.  What is the altitude in that area.  I know I'm at sea level and if I go up 500 feet, my ears start to pop.
