Subject: No Bricks for Intermediate IM Plan?
Sorry to post this again but I can not find brick workouts in my 20 week Silver Medal Intermediate IM plan.  People have said that they may not use "brick" but "run immediatly after bike".  I scrolled through my entire 20 week comments for each workout and they never mention this either?  Am I missing something?  I am two months into my plan and just assumed the bricks would come closer to the 12-20 week period.

Does "Intermediate" assume I know when to "Brick" on my own?

Thanks!

There's only one explicit brick on day 6. We'll check with coach Mike Ricci who wrote it.

Kevin,

I couldn't tell by your reaction as much as that you signed up for the "Intermediate Plan" - no one wants to use my Beginner Plan. :-( But, here is the big BUT, I've had an athlete of mine go 10:27 on this plan at IMFL a few years back. So, my suggestion to you would be to use the Beginner IM plan and I promise you won't be disappointed. You'll have enough bricks, enough bike riding and general fitness to do 2 IM's.

What do you say?

Mike,

I'll chime in.  Constructive criticism perhaps?  The two times I have done IM's, I looked at all three options (beg, int, and advanced).

I didn't look at them based on what I thought where I was (beginner, int, adv), but purely at how difficult the plan was and time consuming.

To be honest, your beginner plan looks like the hardest of the three plans.  You have many MONSTER weeks in there.  I LOT of volume at times.  Plus you long run Thursdays are hard to get in (or they used to be.)  It also has the longest bike and run AND swim of all three plans!  You may have scared people off.  I was a bit intimidated.

I think your plan would give you amazing results, but I never felt like I was ready for it!  Maybe now that I have two behind me...  I personally look forward to trying it out.

Mike,
I picked the intermediate plan b/c I figured I was not starting out from scratch.  I have completed a HIM, a bunch of marathons, and 80-100 miler bike rides.  You know, a basic endurance junkie like many of us on BT!

I thought the intermediate would put me in a place slightly above "just finish".  If it is written w/out bricks, I will trust that it can prepare me for my IM.  If you are saying it is written w/out brick b/c intermediate assumes I have completed a few IM's than that is another story.

Bottom line, will the beginner plan (with bricks and as Kido mentioned, has more rigor) better prepare a 1st time IM'er?  Or can I stick to the plan I started and NOT do the bricks and still be well prepared come 7/25 up at Lake Placid?

Thanks again for your help!

Thanks Jim and I agree it's not easy, but even if you can do 85% of the weeks, you'll have a great IM. And you can always move the long runs to Sunday, that's never an issue. What I like about this program is the cycling frequency and volume, so you don't have to rack up big run miles.

You should try it out, you'll have lots of fun with it.

Kevin,

Honestly, I don't think I wrote this plan. We had another coach write this plan back in 2004 or so - and maybe he didn't think it through, but you need to do some bricks. I would say after every long ride, a minimum of 20-30 minutes. After interval bike sessions, I would run at least 1-2 miles. No matter what plan you decide on, you need to do some bricks.

My preference would be to do the Beginner Plan - just be weary of the time committment, and if you have to cut back the bike volume, go ahead.

Wish i hadn't read this! Just started the Int IM plan, should I switch to the beginner? I thought the Int might push me alittle harder, was I incorrect?

BTW, this will be my first IM

Yes please.
First Ironman = Beginner Ironman.

Once you start training for Ironman, you'll realize you don't need a harder plan, you just need to do what's on the plan

Mike,
There are 2 Beginner IM 20 week plans. One for Gold level membership and one for Bronze. Which do you suggest? Does it matter? Thanks!
