Subject: Training at elevation and racing at sea level?
Has anyone heard of this having a negative effect rather than a positive? I arrived at sea level the day before and struggled through the race.

I live and train in Nashville, TN at 11,000ft and raced in Charleston, SC at about 20ft.

Since the highest point in Tennessee is Clingman's Dome at 6643 feet above sea level, unless you were training in an airplane I think whatever was affecting you had nothing to do with altitude.

I didn't realize that Nashville was that high up...

altitude aside, the change in humidity (considerably increased moisture i assume) may have made that air you were sucking in feel a bit less efficient.

Sorry, I meant 1100 not 11,000ft.

I suppose it could have been the 10 hour drive and the late night beer and pizza that served as my prerace preparation.

I don't think 1100ft can be considered "training at elevation." Like a previous poster said, it's more likely due to humidity differences between Nashville and Charleston.

You're not really getting an altitude benefit from 1100'.  Even though Denver is 5240, and Boulder is 5430, most of the pros train at 7500+
