Pre-race routine:

After the morning race, we spent the afternoon eating a lot and sleeping for about 2 hours. Excellent.
Event warmup:

I felt totally fine going into this race. No nerves, no stomach problems, it was great! This was the first team event, so Ryan and I had to start/end together. We could also draft off each other! Sweet! The format was bike-swim-run, and we started at 3:30 in the afternoon.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 1640 yards

Comments:

After the bike, we had to put on our wetsuits and swim. That was interesting! I took forever to get my suit on, so Ryan just took off without me, since I'm a faster swimmer. I was worried about cramping, since everyone said that happens, but I felt great! No problems at all- I just let me legs dangle along for the ride. Since I had to wait for Ryan to start the run, I could take my time with wetsuit removal- ah, a nice, calm, relaxed transition!

Comments:

We started out on the bike, in a time trial format. This was the same course as the morning ride, and Ryan and I just worked together, very evenly for the whole ride. He had me climb the hills, so that I could watch my powertap and make sure we weren't spiking too hard. What an excellent team! Both of our legs felt great this whole ride.

Transition 2

Run
  • 47m 30s
  • 6.55 miles
  • 07m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was after the swim, and it was the same run as the morning. We were very careful to make this run feel as easy as possible. We both knew if we went out too hard right now, it would really kill our chances at a good half-iron in the morning. We did exactly that, and had a blast running together. Between all the co-ed teams, we were by far the most evenly matched. It made it very easy to race together!
Post race
Warm down:

Again- immediately jumped in the creek. Ah! Nice, cold water.
