Joliette, Quebec
Canada
Jet Triathlon

Overcast
Total Time = 1h 26m 55s
Overall Rank = 22/31
Age Group = Women 20+
Age Group Rank = 2/5
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30am, packed the car and drove to Joliette. Got there at 6am, got set up in transition, went to the washroom, figured out the course, then warmed up.
Event warmup:

15min w/u (2k easy and then some strides)
Swim
  • 14m 22s
  • 800 meters
  • 01m 48s / 100 meters
Comments:

I started swimming and, although I am a strong swimmer, I just couldn't get my muscles going. Pulled off a so-so effort.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more OWS with the wetsuit, I felt like the muscles just were not used to it!!
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

As I was taking off the wetsuit, I noticed just how damn COLD it was outside. Got it off after some struggling, into my shoes and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear a watch on my left hand. It got caught on it. Get the quick release kit. Practice wetsuit removal. Practice jumping on bike with shoes already clipped in.
Bike
  • 48m 8s
  • 20 kms
  • 24.93 km/hr
Comments:

Bike has always been my weakest. In this case, the minute I started biking, I realized that I was soaking wet from the swim, it was a super cold day (in which I would normally have been wearing booties and pants and LS shirt) and I was in my tri suit, sockless. My legs quickly went numb and I painfully trudged along.
What would you do differently?:

Be smart about the weather. Get better at cycling.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

The minute my feet hit the ground, I was in instant pain. My legs were like blocks of ice and each time I took a step, it felt like they were being stabbed. I've never felt this before - it HURT. I got into my running shoes and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

Not get frozen on the bike...
Run
  • 24m 26s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 53s  min/km
Comments:

My run wasn't too bad considering the leg situation. I could not feel my legs! All I felt was pain! It was insane... So I kind of just ran along, hoping they'd defreeze - they didn't. As a result, I couldn't get my HR up nearly as high as I wanted it to be.
What would you do differently?:

Stay warm on the bike. That's what ruined my race, in the end.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, ate food, watched the young triathletes doing their race (7-15 year olds!). Once it started pouring, I jetted out of there, though.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The weather and my silly lack of judgment clothing-wise. My weak bike strength.

Event comments:

Although it was a decently organized race, I have 2 issues:
- Don't put the one and only aid station in the run in the last 800m of the course - that's stupid!
- Attract a large field of athletes. It's okay if they are all young (the triathlon club that held this race is a youth triathlon club). As long as there are more than 50 or so athletes, it makes for a much funner competition and race!

Good job Krystyna!
That kind of weather wasn't particularly triathlon  friendly to say the least. Saturday will be 100x better.

Oh, and you like crushing hopes and dreams... aim higher, go for their soul next time... :P

Good job Krystyna!

It was far from the ideal triathlon day but you went out there and did great!
