Pre-race routine:

Woke up, a little coffee, beagle and pb. Went to T1 and got all set up.

This is the race that is my rematch of my friend from last year. Since my training has been limited my goal was to to beat him out of the water 9:00-9:15, go about 18mph on the bike and/or hang with him when he passed. Then shadow him on the run and race at the end.
Event warmup:

Some stretching and that was about it. Had to wait about an hour after the Oly people started before we did. With the bet on and me not being able to train worth anything for the last 5 weeks I had some nervous energy. Not sure what it was. My HR was like 110 just standing around waiting.
Swim

  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt great and strong heading out. Great rhythm and was drafting well. I got about 200 in and it went all down hill from there. I felt like I had already done 1500. I couldnt breath and all out of sink. Not sure what happened. Had to breast stroke some to get my breath. HR was 195 when I got out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out what happen on the swim. 3 weeks ago I felt like I had a moderate swim and had a 1:40/y ave. Just had no mojo.
Transition 1
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Note to self - When doing a flying mount on the bike make sure your shoes are on the bike. I run past the mount line, past the people clipping in and go to jump on and WTF I am missing a shoe. So I get to go back and hunt for a shoe. I had already passed the time line so the extra time I had to run back and find it goes to my bike time.
What would you do differently?:

T1 went fine. Run the whole time
Bike
  • 37m 14s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.34 mile/hr
Comments:

Well after the time it took to go back and find my shoe I decided I needed to make up for it. Plus I knew I was behind already. I went out pretty decently hard for me. My Garmin time was 34:45 ~ 20.7. I had to alter my plans and catch my friend. I never caught him and I paid for it on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Duhhh - have both shoes on bike when I go to mount.
Transition 2
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

The dismount line was like 20 ft after a 180 degree turn. So it made for a traffic jam.
What would you do differently?:

Run a little faster but ok.
Run
  • 35m 23s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 11m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Well after that bike I was pretty toasted. It was a hard run for me and even walked 2 different times. Not to happy with the run.
What would you do differently?:

Just the normal be able to trian.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited training due to injury. There was something else with the day that I cant put my finger on. The swim was just disheartening. I have felt a little lose in fitness in the swim the last few sessions but not this. I figure it was from no running and biking. Maybe I burned up in the pre-race just waiting and high HR then. I was ok with the bike and run as I expected them to not be the best. But a day of tri racing was still fun and I will be back at another race soon enough. Someday I will have a race where nothing strange happens to be. Not get hit by another biker, not get lost on the run, have both shoes when mounting yada yada yada.

Event comments:

The u turn right before T2 could change but over all great race.

Have to give props to the wife. Without her support and help I would never even get to the start line. Having to drag a 2yo, 3 teenage boys and one of them on crutches around for the day. That woman is all that and a bag of chips.

Great job even though you didn't have the "perfect" race. Take stock that you went out there, had fun, did your best on limited training and recovering from injury. Congrats!

Great, now I am craving chips.  Good results despite your back issues that's affected your training.  Your mojo will come back

Solid effort Todd! Yes, like Kim said... you have faced some tough issues of late and still managed to lay down a solid race.  Great job!

Way to tough it out!  I've had that open water freak out before - not sure what to do about it either.  The only thing that has helped was to do a short warm up swim - even then its not 100%...  Don't worry about selling out on the bike - the run was going to suck anyway (That's my new philosophy...)

Way to get out there. You've definitely had your fair share of challenges, but think of it as getting all the bad mojo out now...once you get it out of the way you are going to dominate. Wink

Sorry to hear about the swim issues.  Lord knows I've had enough of them for all of us!  Way to hammer it out on the bike though!

Having only one shoe on the bike... yeah that sounds like something I would do.  Great race even with the minor issues throughout!

sounds like a tough race, great job finishing.  It's always weird how the body works sometimes.  Sometimes you HR/body just doesn't want to cooperate.  Good job toughing it out.

It looks like a pretty solid race to me.  Sorry it wasn't what you were expecting.  Hopefully you will be able to get your training in and get back to numbers that impress you.

Another race under your belt and a good bit to learn from it. You pushed through your issues and you got it done. I like the fact you went out hard for the bike. You'll def be prepared and ready for the next race, and kudos to your better half.
