Subject: Can any experienced OW swimmers meet for a swim?
Hi! My two friends and I are racing in the Redondo Tri this weekend and have yet to get in the ocean. Would anyone, that has done open water swims already, be willing to meet and go out in the water with us? We have a bit of anxiety over it and would like to get in at least once prior to the race.  Thank you.

Mary

Hmm...maybe...if it were Saturday late morning before packet pickup.

I was going to do a pool swim and short run in the Valley and then head down to the expo, but I could miss some beach traffic if I drove down early and swam/ran in Hermosa or Redondo.  It depends on whether my wife decides to register for the race...right now she has shoulder and wrist injuries, so I don't know that she will, but if she does, I suspect she won't want to drive down early for a swim, etc.  I'll post here if it looks like I'm available to swim Sat....assuming you don't find somebody else or want to do it earlier in the week (I can't do that).

This might be a too much of a drive but OCTriClub (and a bunch of other people) meet up at Corona Del Mar at 5:30 on Thursdays. There are usually between 5 and 15 people in the water for a few hours. Let me know and I'll keep an eye out for you.

Part of the ' bunch of other people ' is a meetup group which also goes down Tuesday at 5 but I've never gone on a Tuesday. Check with Robert on that one, I think.

Shoot, wish you'd posted a little earlier--several of us from my Masters group went down last Friday evening, and you'd have been welcome to join us.

Good luck!

If you look at the LB Tri  Club site, they have a swim at Bayshore Ave and 2nd St (aka Horny Corner don't ask why) in Belmont Shores on Monday at 5:30

Thanks everyone. I am looking to swim Thursday night or Saturday before or after the race check in. Does that work for anyone?

Can't do Thursday night, but might be okay with Saturday late morning before packet pickup.  I'm hoping to get in about 20 minutes of swimming (and 24-30 minutes of running).  I'd be okay with meeting at Redondo or Hermosa.  I could get my run in before or after and start a swim any time between 10:00 and 11:00.  I'm certainly happy to help with the whole "intro to a tri swim in the ocean" part of things.  Don't know if anyone else doing the race wants to meet up...

Thoughts...?

I really wish I could but I am basically racing down to Redondo to get my packet and racing back home. My Saturday is just booked.

I would have loved to help you guys out but this week is just so hectic! I could have easily done this last week.

Oh well, maybe next time.

The group I trained with last year for the pier to pier swim swims on Wed and Fri at 6:30 AM at Manhattan Beach pier. I know those two days aren't what you posted (Thurs, Sat) but just thought I'd throw it out there in case you're interested.

...And if we can do this some time in the 10:00-11:00ish time frame on Saturday, my wife (who's volunteering on Sunday) will probably join in on the swim.  She's probably not going to want to swim much in the way of distance (shoulder injury), so she'll probably be happy to help out if anyone needs some support with entering/exiting the water or stuff like that.

Hmm...that I'll have to talk over with the wife.  I think she was up for a late morning swim, expo, then lunch...we may need to get back to the Valley to take care of some other stuff before the day gets away from us.  I'll let you know.

My wife's up for doing it after packet pickup, so let's work it out.  I'd suggest we PM about it, but I suppose if anyone else reading the thread is going to be there and wants to do a little friendly swim, we can put the details here.

I was going to suggest meeting up at Tri Lab around 1:00pm...might be easier than trying to arrange a beach rendezvous.

Liz (my wife) is totally into being available for coaching getting in and out of the water...I'm planning to do a pretty leisurely 20 min. swim...I'll do it as a 10 min. out and 10 min. back route, probably.

Sound like a plan?

(BTW, the water's not that terribly cold now...it was supposedly 62 at Hermosa when I swam on Sunday morning, but felt like it might have been warmer.)

I don't think I can make it out, but if you guys want to preview the course, it starts just to the north of the first rock jetty south of the pier, out about 150 yards, then straight north to about 150 yards south of the pier.  Transition run to T1 is up the beach, then up then entire one way street from about the showers to the parking lot.  it's a looooong run
