Subject: opinions on cannondale caad9 5
I just put down a refundable deposit on a new 2010 cannondale caad9 5.    It will be my first road bike.  Using it for triathlons and fitness.  I have two tris under my belt and doing a few more this season including an oly.  I am a 33 y/o  mop and currently ride a 25" trek fk 7.2.

I was looking into the Trek 2.1 or 2.3 but it is soldout in my size until August.  Speaking of size,  I am 6'6" tall and  had limited options.  This caad9 seemed like the next reasonable choice as it comes in 63cm.

This bike has 105 shifters and derailers, carbon fork and seatpost and is $1400.   This is a little above my budget but I thought getting the 105 components was worth the stretch.   I will be able to ride it and try it out at the shop before I purchase.  Any reviews from cannondale owners or input would help.  Thanks.

I LOVE mine!!! Of course, I am still pretty new to biking.  I had been riding my dad's old Cannondale 3.0 for the past year.  I tried a ton of bikes and the cad9 just felt "right."  I have been on it now for a couple months and it is GREAT!  BTW, I paid $1400 too.  No regrets at all!!!!

I have an 09 CAAD9 5 and love it.  Its a bit more aggressive geometry then some of theother road bikes (from what I've been told) but i still think it's comfortable.

Go to a local Crit race. Count the # of Caad's there. If it's anything like it is around here, it's like trying to go to a triathlon and counting the Cervelo's.  The Caad9 is an awesome bike...considering it fits of course.

For our first bikes, this year, my wife and I, after LOTS and LOTS of research and shopping around, and test riding, etc. etc. decided on both getting CAAD9-5s  her the clear coat natural feminine and mine the regular in charcoal.

Hers with a compact double, mine with a regular double.

We LOVE them. We've put 500+ miles on them already and got them in late April. No mechanical issues or anything.

I'm not sure why we chose the CAAD9's over the trek, I'm sure it was color for my wife! haha.

OK I'm in the market for a road bike and there really is NOT a choice between company's/bikes---the Caad9 is it.  If you want a race bike "on a budget" this is the bike.  As was posted above---it's like a Cervelo at a tri!!  I personally used to like the Trek's but when you compare them to others it's overprice IMHO (have you checked out the Madone 4.5?!  105 stuff for $2k+).  All the bike forums point to the Caad9 as the best bang for the buck---there's a reason Cannondale sells so many of these things!  I'm looking to go with SRAM though so I'm going Caad9 4 (so the same bike but with SRAM Rival).

My race team is sponsored by Cannondale and we get Caad 9- 1 frames for under 500. Sad thing is they dont have any in stock in our sizes right now or any time soon to meet the current retail demand, if you can get one do it, your size doesnt appear to be that common. Most people doing crits and circuit races wont think twice about getting a Caad 9, they are lightweight, bulletproof, stiff, aggresive, and inexpensive. If you dont like it you will be able to recoup your money if you want to sell it, unlike the Trek, unless it was an upper register Madone.

To all fairness the Madone 4.5 is a full carbon bike, and a really good one at that.
A better comparison would be the Caad to the 2 series Trek.

I think the 300 upgrade for Rival is well worth it.  Cadd9 4 I think...

Absolutely---wasn't comparing the Caad9 series to the full carbon of the Madone (full carbon but spec'd with 105!!  most put their full carbon "race" frames with Ultegra on the "low" end...)---I'd leave that to the Cervelo S1!!  I still feel that you are paying more for the Trek name--even in the 2 series...

And I agree that the Caad9 4 with Rival is worth the extra $300 but the OP stated that the Caad9 5 was already a bit of a stretch of budget....

thanks for all the input!  that 4 with sram seems really cool but I can't afford it.  My original budget was about 1k but bumped it to get the 105.

I'm a little nervous about the size since I have no real road bike experience.  I did a quick fit at the shop and they said I was a 63cm but then I started reading about how they measure bikes and whether it is really a 63??  I will try it out before I buy.  ANy tips when I give it  test ride??

Late reply, I know, but I wanted to add my 2 cents.  I bought my 09 CAAD9 5 and rode it all last year and this including some nice long causal rides, several triathlons and some time trials.  It held its own completely in all 3 of those, plus I think it looked amazing the whole time :-)  The only complaint I have heard is that it can be stiff over the long haul, but I did some all-day rides and had no issues.  The power-transmission, especially on climbs, is without comparison - no pedal motion feels wasted.

So, did you bite the bullet and make the purchase?  If so, I'm curious about how it worked out for you.

Good luck!

I have an 09 CAAD9 5, and like it alot.  I've event added some clip-on aero bars too it.  Rides good.

What are you located, I'd reccomend a place in Houston, that deals Cannondales and I got a great deal on mine.

Arguably, one of the best AL frames out there.  The CAAD9 has a large and loyal following.  I've only test ridden one briefly- but definitely a sweet bike.  As the shop owner told me- A top of the line AL frame is better than a bottom of the line Carbon frame.

I made the purchase last month.  The shop also gave me a great fitting!  Very happy with it.

A bit late myself to reply, but just wanted to throw some sense into this discussion.
Like some of you, I'm a dedicated runner and just started biking.  I was on a budget and new to cycling so it only made sense NOT to drop $5,000 on a bike.  It's been 3 months and I love my CAAD 9 5 or just love cycling (not sure which one).  I upgraded the wheels (and it made a HUGE difference) so far.  I recently started riding with some guys around here, they all have $5,000 - $10,000 bikes... seriously!  To the CAAD 9 defense, I hold my own and more.... especially on the climbs.  But, because i want to get better, i have this feeling like I should be riding what they're riding.  It sounds more like an ego thing to me.
The owner at the local shop says not to invest any money into it and just save for the "new" bike .... the "10,000" bike (which i can't afford)   Is he trying to sell me a bike I don't need?

Does anyone have aero bars on the CAAD 9 bike?  Is it worth it?

I also got the CAAD 9 this past year and have to say I think the bike is very solid. I paid ~1100 and have been very happy with it. As most have mentioned it is a solid Al frame and weigh is also fairly light. I just started doing tris this season so I didn't get a TT bike cause I was not sure if I would stick with it so at least the roadie would be good for other things. After a few tris and a HIM, the bike has been great. I intent to use it for a few HIM and a IM I signed up for 2011, I probably won't get a Tri bike until at the end of 2011 season.

I did add some aerobars and HED 3 wheels to it as you can see from my picture (yes the wheels cost more than my bike...sad I know, but I plan to switch the HED 3 to a tri bike at the end of 2011 so should be good.

Love my 9-5. Got it before was Cannondale was bought out by Dorel and sent 100% of production to Taichung Taiwan. I bought it for it's reputation as a great all around bike that had a race proven frame at an incredibly competitive price, and the made in USA decal sealed the deal for me. Thousands of miles later, its holding up perfectly, just had to repack the loose ball hubs in the stock wheels shimano wh r550's, and replace the Chain so far. 105 group is working great.

No sure what delivers more pain in that picture - trainer or erg? I sometimes have nightmares of doing 3 x 6000 meter workouts in the middle of winter when in college. Of course, I'd love to pick up a nice used Model D if I could!

As for the CAAD, I'm thinking of trading 'up' from my Giant OCR1 to a CAAD 9-4 come spring time for my roadie.

The Concept 2 doesn't give as frequent pain (because I don't use it as much!), but when I use it it kicks my butt and it can still take my legs out from under me!

I used to row in college and it truly is an instrument of torture!   In my view there's no harder work out that a gruelling session on the erg. with a coach watching!

Going to start throwing-in some addotional rowing over the winter for a change of pace.
