Subject: Dizzy after swimming...
Hey all I know this thread has been up here, regarding dizziness and being lightheaded after swimming.  One of the remedies suggested was the use of ear plugs to keep the water out and keep my balance intact.  What I'm looking for here is if anyone has used ear plugs and if it has worked for them.  If not, any other thoughts?

I tried earplugs and it seemed to make a little difference.

However,
I think for me the dizziness was because i was over exerting myself. I tried slowing down my stroke and concentrating on form. My time over 1km dropped by about 3mins and when i finished the swim i was not dizzy or lightheaded at all. I felt great and like i could continue swimming lots more if i wanted.

When i started swimming i would just go all out - i didnt know any better. After some reading the forums and websites i tried slowing down enough to be able to keep my head in the water and breathe every stroke. This made a world of difference.

I had it happen to me at St Anthonys and at an Xterra event, I heard the same advice but on my next Tri I covered my ears with my cap and nothing. It worked. I plan on doing it again at my next race in 2 weeks just to make sure it wasnt a fluke or something. I really dont want to add more things to my races like ear plugs etc...give it shot it cant hurt

It works for DrLeah. Check her logs particularly last Wed.

If I hadn't had the suit on, I'd probably have drowned.  Not an experience I'm looking forward to repeating.

In the pool, it seems to be a problem if I haven't eaten well and/or going too fast for too long.

Hey Leah, I'm glad you chimed in. But I know you're a strong enough swimmer not to have drowned. Your doggie paddle was pretty fast.

I'm sure they'll stay in on Sunday and you'll have an awesome race. You can also try drafting off of misscullen, it worked great for me last night!

How odd. I had this problem today and it was my second time in the pool. I had eaten lunch about 30 mins prior and thought that might have been it. My head was spinning and I was really sick. I'll wear ear plugs next time.

I experienced some wicked vertigo a while back when I was adding more cardio in different forms (read bike and swim)...the doc said it wasn't due to fluid in the ear...I think in my case it was my body trying to adapt to the changes.  Try the plugs, though.  What harm can they do?

had the same thing happen to me, i tried the ear plugs made of a hard silcone that you make into a ball and place in the ear and then push them to block the opening of the ear, worked for me .

ALSO TRY 2 SWIM CAPS! Seems to help a lot.

I used to get dizzy when I first started swimming in the pool, and with time it hardly ever happens anymore.  However in triathlons, I am always flustered and somewhat dizzy coming out of the water.  I was always told it was because you go from a prone position to an upright position.  I might try ear plugs though to see if it helps.  I always feel like a zombie running from the water the TA- not a good feeling!

I always get dizzy after I swim at swim. One time after the 500yd Freestyle I got out of the pool, stumbled around a bit, then fell (bellyflopped) back in. The whole crowd that was watching bust into laughing. Somebody even got it on video.
