Total Time = 1h 24m 17s
Overall Rank = 59/181
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 11/18
Pre-race routine:

Had the drink for breakfast. Got Z out of bed and hit the road.
Event warmup:

Got there late, so nothing. Just had enough time to get wetsuit on and get to water.
Swim
  • 11m 16s
  • 642 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

First 200 yards was great. Then had a fun scuffle with a few guys for about 50 yards. After it broke up, about 100 yards later I lost all concept of swimming. I stammered in the last 300 yards with head completely out of the water and zero rhythm. The only saving grace was that I was able to draft someone.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more longer continuous sets, and just plain swim more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 38s
Comments:

I did a casual T1 as I was using my expected 70.3 plan, but with less recovery. This was about exactly what I expected.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 40m 52s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.62 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt great on the ride. Pretty intense hill right out of transition, and plenty of hills the whole ride. This was basically an out and back course with most of the out being uphill and most of the back down.
What would you do differently?:

If this was an A race, I'd train more hills and do more speed work.
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

Same as T1. This was a relaxed T2 with 70.3 plan. Drank some innergize. Not rushing.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 28m 10s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 08m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

Interesting run. I felt like I was more limited by the terrain than my fitness. I didn't want to tweak anything on the trail, so much of the run I was dodging rocks and potholes with care to avoid a twist which would derail training. The time was awful, but it's hard to know how much I had to give. The trail was an awesome run.
What would you do differently?:

Not much given the terrain.
Post race
Warm down:

I racked my bike and ran a quick mile to see if I really had gas left. I did 8:00, so I was very happy that there was still some fitness in my body left on the course.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swimming was bad and the bike was ok. The run was difficult to gauge because I never run on trails.

Event comments:

Nice venue, perfect conditions today. The trail run was different. I'd say they should play this up more so participants are aware. I really enjoyed the environment and the course.

Nice results and extra bonus - you got to practice your transitions for the HIM. Sorry about the toe - hope it doesn't give you too many troubles.

Well done! Sounds like a fun event. Good swim time considering you had a little trouble. Great start to your 2010 season.

Pretty good times all things considering!  Bummer about the toe injury.....ice cream is one of my favorite comfort foods (and it's got calcium)!

Sounds pretty solid overall best to take it easier on your non-A race(s).

Nice Race Warren!!  I have been trying to do more trail runs just because I am finding them to be fun.   Hopefully I can find a race like this one it sounds awesome.
