Pearland, Texas
United States
Total Time = 1h 03m 41s
Overall Rank = 33/
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 4/26
Pre-race routine:

toast w/ peanut butter.
water
a few sips from the Gatorade in the aero bottle
Event warmup:

swim to get wet
Swim
  • 07m 18s
  • 300 meters
  • 02m 26s / 100 meters
Comments:

I went from no swim (FEB '10) to a slow swim (Jun '10). I was steady and the swim was as uneventful as a full-contact pool swim gets. I passed a few and got passed by a few.
What would you do differently?:

Keep swimming to get my swim time better so I can start a bit sooner and swim with people in the 2:00/100m range.
Transition 1
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

socks, socks socks - keep costing me time. One of these days I will swim with something on or go barefoot.
What would you do differently?:

Stop taking so long to put on socks
Bike
  • 29m 12s
  • 12 miles
  • 24.66 mile/hr
Comments:

275W AVG - super fast bike - so stoked about the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Reset the dang power tap BEFORE the race so I am not trying to reset the thing while riding in a race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Nothing fancy and therefore 10th in AG
What would you do differently?:

Get this transition thing down a little better - Find the bike rack on the first try would be helpful.
Run
  • 24m 43s
  • 3.04 miles
  • 08m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

The fast bike didn't leave a bunch left but I played a bunch of mental games to keep it moving. First mile was pretty slow (9+) and had to go sub 8 to get the time as quick as I did. Drink 1/2 / splash 1/2 worked for the water stations. This kept me moving and helped me a bunch.
What would you do differently?:

Try (somehow) to get that first mile a bit quicker so I can get my sub 8 splits I have been working towards
Post race
Warm down:

Walk right past my friends / family straight to a lawn chair where I sat for about 15-20 minutes. I was DOWN FOR THE COUNT! After the rest I got up and moved around and felt fine. Thanks to my crew for helping me / bringing me crap to hydrate with.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat / fitness / swim time

Event comments:

I HAD A BLAST! The pool swim was a first for me and was interesting to accomplish. I am very proud of my progress in the water and have to take my slow splits and move forward for now. The bike was incredible. I am so happy with that bike ride. Run wasn't on goal BUT I used up a ton of mental toughness points to get what I did. It helped knowing Betsy, Justin, Craig and others were toughing it out in the blazing heat at BSLT today. It pushed me to keep moving and not give up. NO WALKING even in the water stations was huge. I wanted to walk the entire run.

RD did a great job in my mind. The awards start seemed to be awhile to get going but they had decided to wait for the last runner to get started. (we left before they began). The bike raffle did not require us to be present which allowed us to take the tired children home. They had me and plenty of others in the wrong AG on the early timing list; but this was quickly corrected (it scares you to not see your time in your AG). Drinks / food were great. I noticed in my pictures that Keri took that they had a bounce for the kids while I was out on the course. This was a nice touch. Plenty of great goody give-aways (shirt / insulated bottle / towel). Great race.

BIG THANKS for Justin and girls coming to cheer. BIG points for Keri getting a few hours sleep to show up and bring my big girls to cheer. Keri cut her trip to Austin short to be at my race. As always, a thanks to Eric for the coaching help and steady progress in my fitness. I missed my run split goal and didn't place by 30 seconds but I really am excited about this race.

Great racing with Nikki and Tiffany although I never saw them on the course. (They swim much faster and had a huge head-start).

Awesome job today!  Your bike was killer and the run was fast too.  Keep working on the swim and you will be fast in the water as well.

Thanks! - So far I am getting the bike rides in with an Aluminum / carbon seat stay frame Specialized road bike.   I bought this used bike from ebay last August.  I bought new carbon areo bars and got another bike fit right before this race.  I still have some tweaking to do on the fit but it's getting there.  My super heavy wheels (one with my wired Power Tap) aren't helping with the overall weight.  I hope to purchase a tri bike and get some training on it before Lonestar 1/2 IM next Spring.  I won't be selling this bike because I really like it.  I just need something that is more aggressive and saves my legs a bit better for the run.  I am having so much fun on the bike and have seen great improvement since last year when I first started riding.

Great race Ken!  Justine better be paying attention!   Awesome bike split! Your swim is coming into good form!  The run... 8:08's aren't bad, but you are a 7's kinda guy! HA!  Keep up the hard work and dedication and I'll be following you across the finish line in no time!
