Sunny
Total Time = 1h 12m 50s
Overall Rank = 82/245
Age Group = M 30-34
Age Group Rank = 12/24
Pre-race routine:

Breakfast: Power bagel w/peanut butter, banana, O.J., vitamins, water.

Drive up: Sip gatorade and water, rock out.

Arrive: Get marked, set up transition, stretch, walk around.
Event warmup:

Stretching, including assisted leg stretches.
100 meters in pool (crowded!)
Swim
  • 06m 34s
  • 450 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Overall good swim. Unfortunately, I grossly underestimated my time, and had to pass approx. 8 people in the pool. Could have gone at least 15 and maybe 30 seconds faster if not for the traffic jams. Flip turns were difficult to execute in the snake swim.
What would you do differently?:

Estimated my time much lower and flipped closer to the lane lines. I need practice with the flip turn issue.
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Transition was fine for a first tri.
What would you do differently?:

Dry my feet off a little. My socks were soaked in my cycling shoes. I might also consider tri-shoes at some point because my sidis have the buckle fastener at the top which is very slow to close.
Bike
  • 37m 22s
  • 13 miles
  • 20.87 mile/hr
Comments:

Came out of the pool breathing hard and got worried about my h/r being too high. Calmed down after the first half lap and got my breathing and h/r under control and then started hammering. Overall good ride, need to corner harder and faster and pick up more speed on the downhill sections.
What would you do differently?:

Ride harder. I got a little too comfortable about halfway through and could have ridden faster.
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Comments:

Had a little trouble coming in to T2, and didn't get off my bike as fast as I could have. Need to work on coming in fast and jumping off and continuing to run.
What would you do differently?:

Practice riding hard into T2 and jumping off.
Run
  • 26m 7s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Nice, easy, flat course.
What would you do differently?:

Run a little harder, I had too much left in the tank at the end of the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking/stretching for about 15 minutes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pacing experience.

Event comments:

I don't like the snake swim, but I don't have experience with another format, so who knows how I will feel about it after an open water event or another type of pool event.

Hey, Adam - nice race! One question, though, a 6:34 swim and you could've done it :30 faster? Nice work!

Thanks, I read your log too and you had a great race. I'm envious of the run time, mine was dog-ass slow. Not bad for me personally, but still very slow in the world of runners.

Yeah, I think I could've gone :30 faster in the swim. I'm not bragging, I mean look at my pathetic bike and run times, but the swim is by far my strongest and most comfortable event. I was a competitive swimmer as a kid, and even at 6:00 minutes I would probably be a full minute slower than the 15 year old version of myself. I think I'm also doing the September race, so we'll see if I can get down to 6:00. Who knows though, maybe I only swam the 6:34 because I was so full of adrenaline and nerves for my first tri.

Great race, but I agree w/ Himself!! That swim time is quick and to think you could have gone 30 seconds faster... sheeesh!!! I checked the results of the race and you were 15th overall in the swim leg. Very impressive

Thanks, but now I'm starting to feel self-conscious, like I'm being a jerk about my swim time. Certainly not the intent, so I hope it wasn't taken that way.

Maybe I'll have a chance to meet you guys in September. Anyone doing the Rattlesnake Tri in August? I'm signed up for that one.

No worries - I didn't take it that way at all and (I'll speak for Ben) will say he didn't either. We're just jealous and wish we could swim that fast! It sucks walking away thinking you left some time on the course. That's kind of how I feel on my overall race now (but it was my first ever), and my run. Happy with a 7:20 mile, but my goal for Sept. is a 7 min/mile.

I'm signed up for the Rattlesnake. It'll be good to meet you there if not before.

Yeah, what he said
I'm planning on getting signed up for the Rattlesnake Tri too... just procrastinating for some unknown reason.

Thanks, now I don't feel like such a jack-ass.

Maybe I should open this up as a separate discussion topic, but have you guys done any training with local clubs? Rocky Mountain Tri Club or others? I've looked into a little bit, but I'm not sure. I've also thought about checking out the Masters Swim Team at DU, but the training times in the morning (when I usually swim) are just brutal.

I haven't done anything with any tri clubs. I'd like to keep working on my swimming and get to the point where I could join a masters team over the winter. But right now I work full time and am in grad school part-time in the evenings so I kind of have to dictate my own schedule. That will change at the end of the year though! Do you typically swim at DU? That's where I swim (one of the benefits of all that tuition money), but in the evenings for me. If you ever want to do a weekend ride/run/swim or anything, though, just let me know.

I was swimming w/ a masters team at the Utah Park Pool for a while but they've kind of disbanded I think. I missed a couple weeks and when I went back nobody showed up. I could definitely use some coaching though!

As for getting w/ the a tri group, I haven't done that yet but I did happen to meet at least one of the coaches for the Rocky Mountain Tri group at the 5430 Sprint Tri. Can't remember his last name, but his 1st name is Charlie. Seemed like a pretty nice guy. I'd love to get with a group like that though.

In the mean time, I'm always up for a random workout...
