Registration is now open for GUTS Reactor Run 100!

Want to be a part of Georgia and GUTS History?

GUTS will be hosting Georgia's first 100 mile race, March 5-6, 2011!!!  Not ready to run a 100 miles yet, well no worries, GUTS will also be hosting a 50 mile, and a 50k at the same event.  The race will be held at Dawson Forest WMA, in Dawsonville, GA.  The 100 mile course will be a looped course running on horse and mountain bike trails with some jeep roads.  The 50 mile course will be half the 100 and the 50K will be one loop of the 100 mile course with an out and back.  In each event you will have to cross the Etowah river several times, so expect to get wet.

Ready to sign up?  Then follow this link...  http://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=10083

For more information, email [email protected]

I can't do a 100 (yet), but the 50 miler is looking really tempting.

Not in 2011. I am already signed up for ING and my friend bought me a plane ticket to Boston for my birthday so I will be doing Boston in April and that will be the A race. I think a 50 miler nevermind a 100 miler 6 weeks out would be less than ideal for this old lady.BUT if my training is going okay I may do a 50k in early winter.

Which if Dawson Forest is where I ran with Jon Obst this year for his 27 hour birthday run I would say that trail is no joke. Shin deep mud and hopping over creeks and roly poly trails, not what I want to do for 100 miles but I am a wussy.

I forgot to add that I am pacing Mrs Browndog to her first BQ at Ga ING this year, she just doesn't know it yet.

HA! Seeing as how I'd have to shave an hour off of my marathon PR, that may not be quite do-able this year.  Now, in 2012 . . .

We could do the 50k, though, as our last LSD run before ING.  I so want to jon GUTS.  I like them.

a 50k as a long run before ING.  You are funny. Remind what your longest run before your last marathon was ? Uhm, I KNOW you will be able to do an 8:30 pace if you remain uninjured after your IM. Either way I am running it with you and you are running with me so don't get injured!

Wow, Dawson Forest?!

I've spent lots of time out there and the terrain alone is enough to make this run serious at any distance. Throw in a spring rain and those trails are almost impassable. The trails are open to mtb's & foot but are mainly used by horses so they stay a mess. Not to mention that the Etowah crossing is thigh to waist deep on a good day but lots of people carrry their bikes across it so not a bad crossing. I've done it neck deep before & had to swim it once, all depends on the rain levels.

But the GUTS people are top notch (they do Red Top Rumble and others) so they'll be prepared but weather could really change the day. This is just stupid enough to think about signing up for.

Oh & just for the record, DF has quite a history. It is an old nuclear test site for starters.

50k is only 31 miles.

That is only 5 miles more than a marathon and "only" 9.5 more than my longest training run for the marathon.

So, maybe it's not do-able that early in the season for me, but we could be a support crew  hecklers  cheerleaders for Doug.

Time limit 30hrs.

That's a 18min/mile avg pace for the 100miler.  Sounds doable

That 50 miler sounds freaking sweet! I am not hardcore enough yet for that 100 miler.

Question: It is normal to have a river crossing during something like this? I would have thought that keeping the feet dry with that type distance would be the goal, vs sending you through a river several times.

Thoughts? Is that something that just goes along with runs like this?

In each event you will have to cross the Etowah river several times, so expect to get wet.

My limited experience is that ulta and trail runners like to get their feet wet.  It adds to the excitement for them.  They also like there to be a hill to climb that you and I would call a cliff and think mud is really cool.

I like the idea of the 50 miler too, but I think it is going to have to wait until 2012 for me.

Do they use different type of shoes since getting wet and mud are really cool?

Every sport has its own shoe.  Trail running has . . . Trail Shoes!  They have a firmer bottom and more rubber at the toes for the rocks, roots that are kicked.  Some material dries quicker (big selling point).  Believe it or not, I do know a few folks (GUTS) who run the trails in the Vibram Five Finger shoes.

I remember Natalie and I standing there right before the Twisted Ankle trail marathon and the RD announced that the she was able to talk the park rangers into not mowing the field that we would start the race in.  Everyone cheered because this meant that their shoes would be soaked by mile one.   Sick ba$tards if you ask me.

I of course was just wearing regular old running shoes that seem to hold onto the water and mud.

Very cool. There may come a day I am ready for a 100-miler, but not in 2011. That's cuz I WILL be on the start line in Hopkinton in April. After I qualify in October, of course!
