Marble Falls, Texas
United States
Sunny
Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = 8/350
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 2/28
Event warmup:

Setup transition, got in a short jog with some pickups, swam a bit.
Swim
  • 13m 53s
  • 1094 yards
  • 01m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water was very hot, felt myself overheating during the last leg of the swim. Gun went off and there was ~6 of us at the front of the pack for the first couple 100, after the 1st buoy there were two of us. I started drafting off the lead guy but realized he couldn't swim straight worth a damn. Couldn't see anything swimming to the bridge since it was into the sun so I just swam and hoped for the best. Rounded the bridge pylons and realized how hot I was getting so I slowed the pace a bit and cruised into shore.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Had a fairly steep run up to transition. Lead swimmer came out 10s ahead of mean, goal was to beat him out of T1. Had my shoes clipped into the bike for the 1st time so it was only sunglasses/helmet and out of there. The shoes clipped in helped a ton and I came out of T1 in the lead.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 00m 31s
  • 23 miles
  • 22.80 mile/hr
Comments:

First mile the lead is stolen as a guy goes flying by. I look at my power and only pushing 270W, I try to get up to my goal power of 290W but every time I tried my body said no. At this point I was very frustrated that my legs weren't cooperating, then mile 6 came along and my stomach was churning shortly after I threw up, thankfully going downhill! I felt better and tried to get back to 270W, but ended up at 250W. Few more miles up the road and I was passed again and threw up again, it sucked. Hit the turn around and my average speed was at 20.6mph thankfully the way back was more downhill than uphill. No more getting sick for the rest of the ride. I rehydrate the best my stomach would allow and felt fine coming into T2. Ended up with a NP of 262W for the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Not eat Chili's the night before. My normal routine is plain spaghetti the night before cause it's simple and hard to mess up. I deviated from that, never again...
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Run
  • 30m 24s
  • 4.4 miles
  • 06m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Came off the bike wanting to make up for the time lost from getting sick. Felt pretty good the first 1.5mi, avg pace was 6:14/mi and stomach was fine. Mile 2 was a different story, stomach was churning again had to clear it out one more time ended up ~8/mi for the next mile or so. Got passed by a couple of guys and got really tired of it. Saw the next guy that could possibly pass me and tried to match his pace. Ended up holing ~7/mi for the rest of the run and held him off.
What would you do differently?:

Not throw up
Post race
Warm down:

Drank as much water as I could to rehydrate.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stomach issues and dead legs. I'm pretty sure my stomach was upset from the dinner the night before. I wasn't feeling right before the swim started and it really hit me on the bike. It was bad enough coming into the race at the end of a killer 3 week block of training but the stomach issues made this race one of the hardest mentally I've done in a long time.

Event comments:

Very well run race, the bike course was challenging but very scenic and kept you on your toes with gear changes. Only complaint is coming into transition from the bike course merged with traffic and the volunteers/cops did a sub-par job keeping cars from being close to cyclists. I had to slam on my brakes and stop before turning into transition because of cars here. I will be returning to this race at some point so I can really enjoy the course more than this round...

Yup, I think it's official, "pulling and Eric" means puking during your race.

Hey, at least it doesn't involve having something embarassing half naked happen to you like "pulling a Nicole" does.

Nice job pushing thru despite the vomit.

Nice job on the race, especially given how often you got sick.  Way to push through it.  Spaghetti is my go to meal before races as well.  I know how if feels the next day so feel no need to mess around with it.

Yeah - chili's is a big no-no before a race...  They do unspeakable things to food through science...  Nice job continuing to push to the end after the double hurl!

Great job finishing a tough race. I couldn't imagine throwing up during the bike leg and still being able to run. Sorry the race was so tough but it will just make you that much more mentally tough for the next one.
