Pre-race routine:

Spent the night at the in-laws and was expecting a restless night being in different surroundings and with my kids fighting before bed. I ended up sleeping well--probably because this was my DH's first tri (so he was nervous), and in my mind this was a training run for my A race.
Bags were packed and waiting by the door so we could just up and leave. Ate a pb sandwich and a banana, had some coffee and made food for the DH.
Event warmup:

Picked a good end spot and set up transition, helped Steve out, too. Got marked then took a little jog around the parking lot.

  • 400 meters
  • 01m 50s / 100 meters
Comments:

If it wasn't for the LLLOOOOONNNNNGGGGG wait for the ladies at the end of line to start the race, I would say it was a great way to swim. Maybe they need to limit the amount of participants???
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

Short jog from T1 to bike mount. Sock got stuck, but ended up being 3/34.

Comments:

Packed a baby washcloth in my bento bag for my ever-running nose. It worked great! Also had 3 Blocks on the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Learn that I can push it more than I thought.
Transition 2

Comments:

passed someone on the run back to T2. I felt rude, but this was a race!
What would you do differently?:

Comments:

I felt like I wasn't going very fast, but apparently I was.

nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Returned my chip, grabbed some food and went to meet Steve for his start! I was able to keep him company in line for about 15 minutes while he waited to start.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat, humidity. I thought that I may have eaten/drank too much on the bike, but it all worked out ok.

Event comments:

Again, it was a long start for some and could have used 1 more drink station on the run--it was so hot and humid by the time the men started. (It was 3 hours of continuous TT swim starts.) Everything workd like clockwork and HFP did a fine job of management. I will be back next year!

Overall: 12/176
Performance: Good
Got in and warmed up a little before the start. Decided against flip turns due to shallowness of the pool at the ends.
Suit: 2xu
Course: Serpentine swim in lap lanes. This was awkward at first, but then I grew to love it. Placed myself where I thought I should be (6:30-7:30) and passed 2 or 3 in the swim. While I was near the front of the line for a TT start, the last female to swim had quite a wait--I finished the entire race before she even made it through T1. Moral of the story is: if you're impatient, learn to swim fast otherwise you're going to wait a while to even start!

HR was high. Pushed it a little in the pool, and legs were going gung-ho. Didn't want to tire myself out, kept going b/c I thought I had a shot at placing plus this was a training run for Cleveland. I wanted to see what I could do if I pushed it.
Wind:
Course: Began biking on a downhill!! Hilly course that added challenges, but the road was fast. Lots of gear shifting. I even feel like I'm getting comfortable going fast and cornering. I'm glad we drove it the night before!

Heart was running fast, but not as fast percentage-wise as the bike.
Course: Park path--nice and smooth. Downhill start, but a killer hill about 1.25 miles into the course. I knew it was there and it wasn't as long as I thought. Trees on either side of the course did not shade the path, but blocked the breeze. It was HOT and HUMID! Just when you thought you were done, you had two more squares to go. Mentally, the 3rd mile was a challenge.

Well, they said they were going to do the awards at the end, but no one was there.  Steve asked about it and it was like a finisher's medal.  I would almost have rather them give all the kids who participated in the kids tri a medal instead of just the top adults and kids.  It was a great family affair and great viewing.  It was so cute seeing all the little bikes and the smiles on the kids' faces when they finished!

BTW- love the new avatar, Brian!!!!
