Cyclist killed by falling tree branch

Cars are one thing but when God's got it out for you, you're gone.

I do feel sorry for the lady's family, though.

That's exactly what I thought.  I hope she was just trying to get home and not out "practicing riding in the rain" like some here advocate.

It really came out of no where...One minute it was calm out, and about 2 minutes later the trees were bending sideways...

Maybe she got caught in the storm and was trying to get to her car/home?

Sometimes thunderstorms move quickly and strike suddenly. I have been caught 20 miles from home before and had to seek shelter. Can't really fault her on that.

Sad story.  My condolences to the family.

I try not to ride far from home when there's a weather threat, but I must admit to starting an endurance cycling event DURING a thunderstorm a few years ago.  Like playing Russian Roulette, but I got away with that one.

Yeah, really have to question whether you're a biker if this hasn't happened to you... tragic. I bike on a trail and its common to see fallen trees after severe storms. I always think 'what if' when I see a big one across the trail.

Years ago I lost three friends to an accident when lightning struck a tree and it fell across the freeway, striking their car.  No words can comfort family and friends when seemingly random events strike like this.  But it can happen to any of us, bike or not.

There is a park trail here along the river some of the limestone cliffs collapsed accross the trail recently, great big boulders, this happened right after Xterra had a race on that trail. Thank God no one was hurt.


Condolences to her familly.

You know, I didn't post about it here, but two weekends ago I was on a long 5+ hour ride. It had been planned for a week, and it's crunch time, so when rain was predicted we headed out anyway. There was no thunderstorm, just rain and a little wind. We were passing a farm and heard a weird noise and it was a huge limb starting to come down. I stood up and hammered a little extra, but it didn't end up coming down on the road.

Still, that incident is now way scarier after reading this. How tragic.

She was out living her life though. Stuff happens. Like the other post - get busy living....
