Haven't really done open water..someone described it as swimming in pudding...well, maybe it wasn't that bad, but was different than the pool. Was in the second wave of the day, the first wave being the elites and relays..After their wave went off we entered the water and were on a fairly rocky bottom..I found a nice algae covered rock(at least I hope it was algae) and stood there listening to everyone else mumble about their feet hurting from the rocks. I enjoyed the wave start better than the pool starts..I got drilled in the chest by either an arm or foot in the first 25 yards, and it knocked the breath out of me some..just when I recovered from that I didn't turn enough and drank a bunch of lake..after that, the swim went well
Transition 1
  • 02m 4s
Comments:

A lot better than Sullivan
What would you do differently?:

The run from the lake to Transition was kind of gravely, and then a lot of sticks and rocks and dirt..to be honest, I would consider stashing some flip flops or something at water exit..
Bike
  • 38m 44s
  • 12.5 miles

Comments:

Heat freaking killed me on the bike..That said, I'm not sure about the distance. Official race info listed it at 12.0, my computer said 12.5, another guy's computer said 13. Another guys said 12.2...I drove it on Sunday and it came out at 12.6...I'm going with my computer. Course was well marked and unseen potholes you were given plenty of warning about.

Comments:

It was HOT, I'm not that great in heat, but I made do.
What would you do differently?:

Honestly, I would have dumped more water on my head
Post race
Event comments:

I'll do this race again, I just hope the heat index is less than 100 degrees next year..
I had three goals going in:
20 mph bike pace...almost
1:15:00 or better....done
Top 40% of field.....done

Great Job!!

Super that you beat all your goals and were very very close in the bike! Sounds like an interesting swim with slippery rocks and a few arms flying here and there. The heat really makes racing more difficult..but you did great.

Nice Race!

Brad- Sorry I'm late getting to your race report, but hey, better late than never! Look at your times!! You were smokin! I'd kill for your run, bike and swim times!! Yeah, OWS is definitely different than swimming in a nice, quiet lane. All your technique kinda goes out the window unfortunately! Great job- ready to do another one??
