Pre-race routine:

As many of you know my favorite band is Rush. Well this summer Rush is on tour and it is call the Time Machine tour. They are playing a lot of old favorites and showing that old guys can still rock. Well this tri season, as I aged up, has been a bit of a Time Machine tour. The city on the tour this weekend was Oshkosh. Oshkosh is where I did my 2nd ever tri (2005) and my first Oly (2006). Well mother nature almost rained on the hit parade.

Woke up early (3:30) to drive up from home. All dry at home, but knew T-storms were in forcast. As I drove up got quite a light show put on by mother nature in the form of lightning. About 1/2 way up the skies opened up with heavy rain. I hoped by the time I got there the rain would have passed. It had not.
One of the benefits of experience is being through this before. So I had a bunch of plastic bags that I put my stuff in that I didn't want to get too wet. Everything else got wet, real wet. However, the tri gods shined as it stopped raining just as the race was set to start.
Event warmup:

Setting up transition in the pouring rain was enough. Also getting my wet body into my wetsuit was quite a feat.
Swim
  • 10m 51s
  • 481 yards
  • 02m 15s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was in 21 out of 22 waves so I had to wake myself after waiting over an hour from the time I left transition. Got a nice hello from Bbmoozer, before I got into water. I am convinced that this course was long. It is no secret that I am a slow swimmer. However I took a somewhat agressive approach on this swim. Within about 5 feet from start, I was swimming and pushing my pace pretty hard. Hell, I was even kicking. Being in a late wave, even I had lots of people to pass. At about 1/2 way, I was actually out of breath a bit. I caught my breath and then pushed hard back on the way in. When I hit the beach I was expecting to see a pretty good time (for me) instead I saw 9:58. F*ck I said to myself, except I accidently said it out loud. (sorry folks) The run to transition took almost another minute.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure, because I pushed harder on this swim than any other one this year. Of course actually swimming in training might have helped (swam exactly 350 yeards since last tri two weeks ago)
Transition 1
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

Decided to go sockless and that was smart. Considering all the stuff I had to get out of plastic bags, this was not bad.
What would you do differently?:

One of the great mysteries of life
Bike
  • 49m 51s
  • 15.25 miles
  • 18.36 mile/hr
Comments:

I decided to do the sprint because my bike is in such a place that the long ride (32) for the oly course would have been a sad display, that my pride could not take. Truth be told, I have given up on figuring on what is wrong with my biking. I nearly quit tris last year because of lack of progress on the bike. This year has been better, but no where where it should be. The difference this year is that I still want to figure it out, but that isn't happening until after my marathon in October. So I got to take what is given to me. What was given to me was wet roads, lots of wind and lots of beginner bikers. First mile and last mile through school parking lot really hurt my average (14.4 and 16.5) The only satisfaction I really got from bike was saying to others (in my head most of time) "I'm coming for you on the run."
What would you do differently?:

Hire Tripletmom or lrunfit to ride my bike for me
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

HOLY CRAP this was terrible. for some idiotic reason I decided to put on socks. They were not soaking wet but a bit damp that made putting them on a struggle. Also bad transition spot made for long run to get out.
What would you do differently?:

Leave the socks at home
Run
  • 22m 27s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

This was my time to show that old guys can still rock. Attitude is funny. On the bike I expect crap and I get it. On the run I expect to PR and I expect to pass lots of people. What do I get? Crap. HA, almost had you there didn't I? No, what I got was a PR for this race and just missed fastest 5k by 3 seconds. I passed a ton of people and was passed by one (which I overtook again) Only thing that slowed me down was unsuccessful attempt to get some water from aid station.
What would you do differently?:

Dig a little deeper and find that 3 seconds
Post race
Warm down:

Hanging with Nicole (congrats on Hardware), Patrick, Tammy (congrats on Hardware)and Lisa (congrats on awesome job on 1st oly and staying on your bike)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Attitude man. Its all about the attitude... oh and that damn bike.

Event comments:

What started as a miserable morning ended up being a sunshine day. As always enjoyed time with my friends. A 15 minute PR for this race was just icing on the cake. Rock on!
