Elite 3235 San Diego | Subject: RE: IM Nutrition I used it. It worked well for me. The problem I had was I can get Cytomax and Carbo Pro here in San Diego and I ordered the Metabolol from Brian. That worked great during training but as I was preparing all of my stuff to take to AZ. I ran out of Metabolol and nobody sells it. I had enough for the bike but used just Cytomax (2 scoops) and Carbo Pro (4 scoops) for the run. Also, Metabolol takes some getting used to. They say if you love it during training, you will tolerate it during the IM. If you tolerate it during training you probably won't keep it down during the race. For next year I think I will stick to just Carbo Pro and Cytomax or find the http://www.sportsquestdirect.com/ equivalent to Metabolol only because they are local (and a sponsor) of mine. With that said, Brian has been a good source of info for me and this site and we should support him whenever possible Hope that helps |

Extreme Veteran 439 Germantown, MD | Subject: RE: IM Nutrition I've used a similar cocktail in training, substituting Hammer Perpeteum for the Metabolol. I plan on using it during my 1/2 IM this august. Have had no issues. I have actually gone to a higher concentration (3 scoops carbopro, 3 perpeteum, 2 cytomax and a dash of salt) so that I only need one bottle (plus gel flask) instead of two for the 1/2 IM distance. No race experience with it yet. |

Expert 690 Rocky Hill, Connecticut | Subject: RE: IM Nutrition Okay, so my next question is, where did you get protein from? I have reviewed the ingredients for these and they do not contain protein. Also, how much are you drinking at a time, a so called "hit"? |

Elite 3235 San Diego | Subject: RE: IM Nutrition For protein, Endurox R4 after my training. I used 1 bottle of Cocktail every 1.5 hours. I set my watch to beep every 15 minutes, so I drank 1/6 of the bottle at a time. I also drank water in between each cocktail "hit". I carried 2 bottles on my bike and 2 in the special needs bag during the race. I had 2 bottles on my bike and carried 2 baggies of cocktail mix in my pockets during my training. |

Master 1661 Newbury Park, CA | Subject: RE: IM Nutrition I used the Iron cocktail for training and in one HIM so far. I'm with Madcow, the Metabolol takes some getting used too - taste wise. Lately I have cut out the Metabolol and use some gel. I worry when you say you couldn't stomach accelerade, that seems pretty tame especially compared to the Iron Cocktail, but everyone is different so give it a try. The Carbo Pro is great stuff. You can add it to Gatorade for extra carbs and it doesn't change the flavor much, if any. |

Champion 6931 Bellingham, Washington | Subject: RE: IM Nutrition Wow, good topic. Tried Hammer Perpetuam for the first time today during my ride. The LTS (also an Ironman finisher) sells/uses it. Weird taste, but body handled it ok. But it was only 2 hours on the bike. Willing to experiment like a mad scientist. |

Elite 3498 Chicago | Subject: RE: IM Nutrition I'm keeping things simple. Brian knows his schiznit but it's a little too much for me. I've been training with and will use at IMWI two 3-hour bottles of Perpetuem with a shot of hammergel in each one. I will take 3 medium sips at 15 minute increments and chase it with water to ensure appropriate osmolality, decreasing my dehydration risk. What I've found is that after about 5 hours on the bike I need a different "taste" so I'll have a hammergel flask with me to change things up a bit when I feel like something different. Good thing about staying with the same vendor is that the ingredients are the same and when it HOT out and my HR is up, my body tends to not like too much crazyness. I've used this nutrition plan on 100+ mile rides as well as rides up to 7.5 hours. the only other nutrition I'll be taking is endurolytes 1-3 every 1/2 hour (depending on the temperature on race day). |

Extreme Veteran 439 Germantown, MD | Subject: RE: IM Nutrition Steve, you go with Perpeteum straight-up? I did try that and honestly it was pretty terrible. Adding the cytomax gives it a much more palatable (to me anyways) flavor. But with race nutrition, to each his own, right? |

Elite 3235 San Diego | Subject: RE: IM Nutrition Just a note: No matter what you use during training, you should also train with Gatorade and GU's of all flavors. During Az. I had a nutrition plan but when it came down to it, I had to change things up. I had practiced with Gatorade and knew I could take it, but I had been using a different gel. I didn't have that gel on race day so I had to use GU. I knew I could handle Vanilla so I took those on the bike, but on the run most of the stations had Raspberry, Orange (I think) and some coffee flavor. I Hadn't tried any of those flavors and none of them sounded good to me. When I did find a station with Vanilla, I stocked up on it, and ended up fine. But you need to make sure you handle these flavors in case things don't turn out like planned. |

Expert 690 Rocky Hill, Connecticut | Subject: RE: IM Nutrition I learned a similar lesson at Tupper Lake this year, after cramping due to dehydration off the bike and with my accelerade down the tubes all I could get down was H2O. However, I new I needed some calories so I began experimenting w/ different items at the aid stations, the pwerade worked fine but I found that bananas were a life saver for me. Not only did I feel better after each station, but I got stonger as the run went along. As it state on Gordo Byrns website you have to be flexible with the nutrition plan. Adios |

Elite 3498 Chicago | Subject: RE: IM Nutrition I usually make a 3 or 4 hour bottle (in a 28 oz water bottle) of Perpetuem. Thatmeans either 6 or 8 scoops per bottle. Sometimes if I feel feisty Iadd a shot of hammergel to spice things up...but I'm so used toPerpetuem straight since I've been using it for so many months now Iusually don't hammer gel it anymore. I do carry a couple e-gels with me just in case I feel like I'm gonna bonk and need something with quick action and since Perpetuem doesn't have any simple sugars and e-gel does, I keep e-gels for those "emergencies" to take "pre-bonk". |

Elite 3088 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: IM Nutrition So reading this thread, I'm starting to wonder: I've been fine in all my training with nothing but Gatorade, Gu, and water. That's pretty much my plan for the 1/2 IM I'm doing in October, though I may include some fruit bars or something light but with some solidity in there. Is there any reason NOT to go with just those basics? I'm doing IMLP next year and wasn't really planning on gettting crazy with exotic mixtures for that either. I'd rather go out light on the course and be able to grab what I need from the stations. |

Extreme Veteran 484 McHenry, IL | Subject: RE: IM Nutrition I've been happy just using Gatorade Endurance during all my long workouts, which is what they're serving on-course this year. One bottle of that, plus half of a Clif bar per hour, gives me about 270 cals and 750 mg/sodium per hour, plus that additional electrolyes they've added to Gtrade End. I'll add about one bottle of water per hour for typical temps, even more water plus one Succeed cap per hour if it's really hot. That's it. Keeping it simple this year. In the past I've supplied my own liquid for IMs. It's a bit of a pain. I'm happy to not have to mess with that this year and just rely on the Gatorade Endurance served on course. -Steve |

Expert 690 Rocky Hill, Connecticut | Subject: RE: IM Nutrition I agree keeping it simple is the best plan, and I think I am leaning towards using cytomax mixed w/ some perptuem for the protein. For the run, I will try and use whatever, they have on the course, Gatorade Endurance for Firmman. But I think a critical piece is, if something begins to not go right, don't be afraid to try a little something different. For me the bananas that they were giving out at aid stations were a godsend (as I stated earlier in this thread) and I never used them in training. Gordo Byrnes, has a great piece on 1/2 IM nutrition on his website, and sometimes being flexible is the key to getting through a race. Adios |
