Member 90 | Subject: Does anyone here think alcohol is poison to your body? I have not had one sip of alcohol since I started training months and months ago. Before, when I did have a beer or two, I could feel it the next morning. Something as simple as 2 beers would make me a little slower and sluggish the next morning, to the point I could tell that I had a drink or two. I'm not even talking about getting drunk, just a couple. I don't miss having a drink at all, and when I can tell the next day that I had one, it leads me to feel like I am putting poison into my body. Does anyone else feel this way? |

Something as simple as 2 beers would make me a little slower and sluggish the next morning, to the point I could tell that I had a drink or two. I'm not even talking about getting drunk, just a couple. I don't miss having a drink at all, and when I can tell the next day that I had one, it leads me to feel like I am putting poison into my body. Does anyone else feel this way? (Disclaimer: I used to drink an awful lot, and I drink very little now.) I find the bolded part hard to believe (but of course the body is a very individual thing and maybe yours is very odd -- no offense intended!) The alcohol in 2 beers is LONG since metabolized before the next morning, and there are basically zero dehydration effects from that much alcohol -- if anything, the opposite is true (due to the large amount of water in beer). Anyway, to answer your question, no, I do not think it is 'poison', or even particularly bad for one, if consumed moderately. I cut (way) back because I wasn't consuming moderately. I still have 3-4 drinks (glass of wine usually) per week. One night several weeks ago, at a going away party for a good friend, I drank Scotch until midnight, slept 3 hours, then won my AG the next morning, so no, I don't think it hugely effects my performance, though admittedly I didn't feel all that great. Regular 93 | Subject: RE: Does anyone here think alcohol is poison to your body? Yes, alcohol is a poison. Pick up a biochemistry textbook if you don't believe me. Why do you think it's used as a disinfectant? And you do realize that you are killing BILLIONS OF LIFE FORMS so you can enjoy your beer. Poor little yeasties! However, like many things, while alcohol does nothing good for you and can cause serious health problems, it is also delicious. So is caffeine, which you also don't need to survive in any way and can kill you if you have enough of it (this usually happens to people like long-haul truckers who pop a bunch of No-Doz; overdosing from coffee is pretty much impossible unless you're trying really, REALLY hard). So really, although it is not and never will be good for you, drinking alcohol in moderation isn't really going to hurt you. Genetics play a role in this, as well as the quality of alcohol (low-quality alcohols can have other ingredients that aren't good for you), in what exactly "moderation" is. Of course, if alcohol makes you feel ill, don't drink it! That would just be silly. But generally people can tell if one or two beers is okay, or if they need to hold off when they're training. But then there's me, who decided to have four beers one night then had the best bike ride ever the next day. YMMV, as they say. |

Master 1970 Somewhere on the Tennessee River | Subject: RE: Does anyone here think alcohol is poison to your body? Yes alcohol is a poison. Put enough into your system and you will be dead. That being said, i do drink, but lightly. I also find that the fitter I am, the less I drink as I am way more sensitive to alcohol's effects. |

Member 291 Hugo, MN | Subject: RE: Does anyone here think alcohol is poison to your body? @Alukonis There are very few things in this world that are not damaging or fatal if taken/performed in excess. One can certainly drink too much water and die - and I'm not referring to drowning either. @TheEdge So if alcohol and beer makes you feel bad the next day, then keep it out of your diet. Not a big problem really. Right? Edited by silentcs42 2010-08-21 3:35 PM |

Master 2404 Redlands, CA | Subject: RE: Does anyone here think alcohol is poison to your body? It is a poison technically. I avoid it when I train because I've had days were 2 beers would give me a hangover or sick and you don't train well the next few days.. I still have one on occasion, but they have to be on my terms. |

Expert 936 Salisbury | Subject: RE: Does anyone here think alcohol is poison to your body? I think part of the "problem" with drinking is that you usually end up doing it at night and end up staying out/awake later than normal. For me THAT is as much the issue as the alcohol. |

One can certainly drink too much water and die - and I'm not referring to drowning either. Sure, but try living without water. Too much vitamin A will kill you (hence why you shouldn't eat bear liver) but, again, try living without it. There are several trace minerals necessary to life (e.g. iron, cobalt, nickel) that will kill you if you have too much of them. Salt will kill you, too, but you can't live without it, either. You can, however, live without alcohol. Quite easily. Frankly I don't really see your point other than "yeah well other things kill you too" as if, for some reason, you thought I was not aware of that. My point that alcohol is a poison still stands. |

And Tylenol can be more dangerous than either alcohol or caffeine, yet many people give it to their kids. Because they know what a safe dosage is. Enjoy, just don't overdo. |

I dont touch it and I hope I never touch it again. Many billions of people have enjoyed it responsibly and safely. There is nothing evil about alcohol, so don't blame the "chemical" for the lives that were destroyed.
OP...do what works best for you and makes you happy on this one. Just keep an open mind and realize that it's your opinion, and that others probably won't agree with it. I drink regularly, usually 4-5 nights a week 1-2 drinks. I've never noticed a difference. Sometimes I'll go a few weeks without drinking and not notice any difference. On the extremely rare occasions I have 3-4 drinks, it's usually a weekend night and I've never noticed any difference the next morning getting up for my weekend workouts. |

Member 90 | Subject: RE: Does anyone here think alcohol is poison to your body? I hope no one thinks I was trying to offend, or put down, or question anyone's motives or wants for drinking. I could care less if anyone drinks. I used to drink myself silly years ago. I just wondered if anyone felt the way I did about their body being sensitive to the effects of alcohol. That is all. Don't read too deep into my question. |

To the OP, saw your 2nd post no offense taking. But sorry, can't agree about alcohol being a poison but to each his own. |
