I see there are 8 signed up for the half, 7 for the olympic (mini), and 11 for the sprint. as of 5 Sep

Right now I  am signed up for the half but I have not been running so I may switch to the olympic.

I did the half last year.

For new comers to this race:  the swim is shallow at the start/finish side of the rectangle so be prepared to see runners.  that top of the rectangle is deeper and if you are not comfortable with open water swimming you should get practice ahead of time if possible. The run from the water to T1 is long and uphill. there is a dog leg on the half bike - don't miss it. watch for loose gravel on your turns.    the ride is often windy so be aware.  the run offers no shade.

How is training going?

Boy, Brue, you don't make it sound intimidating at all!

We may be in for a relay, but have yet to decide b/c of the Algae blooms (even though it's said to be safe)...

Sorry - it IS a fun/good race.  I was just highlighting areas to be aware of the rest will run smooth as silk.

Algae smalgee .  A little weed won't kill you.

I'm in for the sprint and probably a big shock as well.  I don't own a wetsuit and my only experience with OWS is swimming across the Ohio River for a case of beer in college.Innocent  The temps have been dropping a bit lately so I'm expecting a cold swim that early in the morning.  My training has been crap of late as well.  My oldest boy started kindergarten and soccer so that takes a large amount of my time on top of work.  Oh well, What doesn't kill you makes you stronger I recon.

i should be right behind you (or not)

i would like to go close to 30 mins on the swim.  the swim
2:48 or better (20mph) on the bike
and assuming my foot isn't throbbing a 1:40 run
add 2 mins for trans

I should finish at 5 hours. (i was 5:05 last year)

However, If i do the oly I will finish way ahead of you!!!!!!

I'm in for the oly, will be my second oly ever.  This race is my nemesis-The water is natoriously (sp?)cold and choppy and that one hill on the bike is challanging for me.  Also the run on the grass.... need I say more.  Very challanging race (for me) but I hope one day to master it.  This is the race last year that convinced me I am a cold water wimp and I went to buy a wetsuit.  Have been much happier with my swims since.  I can't wait!

As of the 3rd ODNR changed advisory to, "An algae bloom has made this area potentially unsafe for water contact. Avoid direct contact with visible surface scum."  Last week they were advising no contact with the water.  It'll be my first HIM.

itd going to go up and down quickly with temp changes, from what i remember from school/water eco stuff it will bloom very very quickly in sunlight./hot weather, but will also die off just as quickly if the weather turns colder/a good rain comes through.

This will be my first year doing tri's and this will be my first HIM, I have raced 3 sprints this year. I just want to finish, I suck at running, and slowly getting better at swimming. I will probably be last in my age group but I'm ok with that at my first HIM.

I can swim the distance in a pool in about 45 mins, usually I'm a little faster in open water, i think its becasuse i don't have to stop and turn around at the walls.

I'm hoping to keep a 19+mph average on the bike (depending on weather)

again my running sucks, I've never ran 13miles in my life. im probably going to be 10 -12 min per mile. I'll be walking some I'm sure.

Hopefully i can make all the cut off times.

if anyone has tips, questions, or advice for this race lets throw it out there.

my tips/advice for the half course:

that first loop of the bike will be your easiest, dont overdo it. the wind WILL pikc up later.

the hills at the end of each loop can wreck your day. they are not big, but dont try and kill them, smooth up and over the top will save you minutes on the run later.

you'll have two chances two chances to grab new bottles, but be ready to carry most of your cal with you, without stopping you wont be able to pick up anything but HEED.

be ready for that run up to transition, you can save a LOT of time there and pass a LOT of people.

be ready for the wind, it sucks, but mentally knowing its coming will help.

the run course is dead flat, and totally exposed. you'll have about 100 feet total of shade on the course. wear a hat/visor and sunglasses. there is about 300m of grass/dirt trail before yo uhit the dam, enjoy it before you get to the crowned road that goes out ot the run around.

i'll say this again because it gets lost on a lot of people, PACE THE BIKE. a half a MPH easier on the bike can save you 10-20 min on the run.

Starting to question my ability to finish the distance.  Not nervous about racing, just starting to wonder if its doable.  Set this HIM goal in January, but after my 56mi bike yesterday, I don't know if I could have done the run.  Lower back pain usually creeps in after 40-45 miles on the bike.  The wind everybody is talking about has me scared as well.  Problem is my run is my weakest leg always has been.  The 1:30 bike cut-off has me concerned.  I normally would just show up and start swimming and see how it plays out, but this is a big distance, so I'm currently accepting all inspires.

you'll be fine, pace it well and its a walk in the park. on the back issues, do you normally have back pain off the bike, or is your bike seat too high?

I actually think my seat is a little low, based on my knee angle.  My back is always a slight issue on long rides and runs.  I am a clydesdale, and my flexibility has always been a weakness.

I just signed up for the half today, mens age group 25-29. I was unsure about racing untill my ride yesterday. I rode 63 miles (3hrs, 10min. 18mph avg.)  followed by a 6.5 miles run. My legs actually felt good during the run. The ride was really windy, I've heard deer creek can be windy so it was good training yesterday.

This is my first HIM, I setting a goal of 6.5 hrs or better. I can't wait!

i've never done hueston, but the run course is DEAD flat. (as in the flatest run you'll prob do), the srint course will have two hills at th end of the loop, the rest of it is dead flat.

the course is simple. the wind is the only thing that makes it bad sometimes.

I had til midnight last night to decide if i could do this event.

after Sunday's sprint tri I realized that I still need rest, rehab and possibly medical intervention.
I could get through another 5 or 10 k but it wuld not be a quality race and would just perpetuate the problem.

another option was the aqua/bike but i would only be doing it as a training event and i don't think i need to drop $95 and half a day for that. besides i am concerned that biking may also be contributing to my problems.

so, bottom line.  I'm out.

I have a 5k scheduled for late Oct and a cyclocross race in Nov or Dec.  That's it for the year.

good luck to all of you
