Pre-race routine:

Woke up sooooo early for this race. Had to meet Ashley and Corey for the relay at about 4:30am. Ate my standard breakfast and picked everyone up and headed down to the beach.
Event warmup:

Nothing special. I only had to do the swim, so my only warm up consisted of an out and back swim until I got used to the water temp. Didn't take long and I was ready.

Pretty cool side note, there were a ton of dolphins out there and some came quite close....very cool.

Well, this was my leg. I really wanted to put in a good swim for my team. With Ashley doing the run, we knew we had to give her as big a lead as possible for any hope of a podium.

I felt real good when I took off...faster than I normally swim. But, I was getting passed. There were some fast people in my wave. One girl passed me just wearing a bathing suit. After about 8-9 people passed me, I settled into a good pace. I was right beside another cap of the same color and I decided I was not going to let him beat me. After a few hundred yards, I started to drop him and I got into a really good groove. Felt great for the rest of the swim. I just think my start wasn't as good as it should have been.
What would you do differently?:

Just try and hang with the top people and see if my fitness can keep me with them. I know I have the speed to stay with them at the start...I just wonder if I can keep their pace all swim.
Transition 1
  • 01m 48s

Transition went well...I just kept my cap on and my goggles on my head as all I had to do was transfer the chip.
  • 1h 04m 1s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 23.29 mile/hr

Corey Neuer did the bike for us. Great cyclist but has been battling with Epstein Bar and hasn't been able to train that much. He was very happy with his bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
  • 51m 2s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 13s  min/mile

Ashley my girlfriend did the run and was a little disappointed with her time. She is very inconsistent. She has run that course in 48:30 before and this was obviously slower...oh well, she did her best and that is all you could ever ask.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing...Ashley did great

Nice job!  We must have been in the same AG was grouped with the relays.  From your time, though, it looks like you took off and (literally) left me in your wake!

Thanks guys. I was a bit disappointed with the swim for all the wrong reasons. It was a PR for me at that distance....but I came out of the water 10th. So I was bummed.

BUT...I forgot, though, that when you do a relay, you are swimming against a lot of swimmers. My swim time put me about top 5 percent of the regular field but only top 14 percent of the relays.

So now, I actually feel really good about it.
