Swim
Comments: I am in the water waiting for the green light and then there is a call out that someone in the previous wave had a heart attack. This was not a very good mental boost for my swim. We were delayed about 10 minutes. Someone after the race said that he had died but I don't know for sure. Either way it put a much needed perspective on the race especially since my wife and kids were there. It's only a race. After the delay our wave went off and this time I started at the back of the field. I felt really good, almost too good. Do yourself a favor if you are doing an open water swim buy a swim mask, try it you will love it. Anyways I gave it a final kick at the end and came out smiling. This was a confidence booster for my IM race as I felt I could swim 2.4 at this pace. Transition 1
Comments: messed around with my poler for too long. What would you do differently?: mess with the watch while riding Bike
Comments: I don't incorporate too many climbs into training, for this race I should of. The 15% climb kicked my ass. If I had a triple I think I could of not walked. After the walk up the hill I passed people like mad but the walk ended up killing my time and legs. After the walk up I said screw it and went as hard as I could but I could never make up the 5-10 minutes I lost there. On the downhill there was medical personal there after someone had hit a car. The downhill was very fast where you could easily reach 50+mph. The again I heard that they had died after the race. Sad day. What would you do differently?: Hill climbs? Transition 2
Run
Comments: I felt really good to start the run, I know it doesn't show. Except on mile one where there was a guy lying on the ground in bad shape, mentally my day was shot. I ran the first mile at about 11:00 and stopped at the aid station for water. I ended mile 2, felt good again about a 11 min mile. Mile 3 was the killer. I felt well and wasn't breathing hard but my hr was running at about 173. I couldn't it down below 170. I am not sure what was going on, maybe I bonked? The rest of the run/walk it what killed. I need to find out why in races I can't run a 9 min mile without killing myself but in training I don't have this problem. Post race
Warm down: hang out the family, went swimming with my son. What limited your ability to perform faster: Time to train. Last updated: 2005-07-25 12:00 AM
