Pre-race routine:

Last week I was asked if I wanted to do a relay at Harbor Lights, of course I said yes. :-) We were Team Dental since we were all dental hygienists.

Got in a 1.5 mile run when the packet was left at my house. Almost 2 miles to the venue. Sheesh.
Event warmup:

Fed my son and went to the bathroom, that was about it.
Swim
  • 13m 20s
  • 800 yards
  • 01m 40s / 100 yards
Comments:

The only good thing I did was round the buoys. I freaked a little in the first 200 yards, started hyperventilating a little. Realized I wasn't exhaling under water. So I finally started exhaling and it helped me relax. Finally got my rhythm the last couple hundred yards. That was the waviest swim I've done.
What would you do differently?:

Get in the water and get comfortable. The initial shock with the run start from the beach kind of took my breath. Think about exhaling with each stroke.
Transition 1
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

Was a pretty long run from the beach to transition. Kept a steady jog all the way to the far end where Jill was waiting to do the bike. It was already getting hot. I'm so glad I just had to do the swim.
Spent the rest of the time keeping Josh cool as the temp crept up to near 100 degrees. Poor Trish had to do the 4 mile run. yuck.

Event comments:

Great post race party. Met up with Laura and Marcie. One complaint- venue too far from parking. Had to push my son in the stroller all the way. At least there was a bus to go back to parking. Need a few more buses, one doesn't cut it.
Next year I plan on doing this race myself.

Nice swim out there, Brenda!  I thought it was pretty rough conditions out there (but, of course, you KNOW I would think that.... )...and that time is pretty damn good, esp. since you had some initial trouble getting into a rhythm.

Fun meeting up with you afterwards... I like that we keep picking the same races to do.

Oh - and did you mention it in your report?  Congratulations on the hardware!!  Second place finish... not too shabby.

Oh, and we took second place in the women's relay category. Got a nice medal and a free TYR hat and mesh bag. Still feel like a slight cop out since I didn't have to endure the heat on the bike and run like you and Marcie. Oh well, at least a swim is better than nothing at all. I probably would've just sat in the air conditioning all day doing a bunch of nothing.

Brenda, awesome swim!  That swim really was something else.  Since you are the swim leg of these relays, any interest in doing Big Shoulders with Laura and I?  Choice between a 2.5K  or 5K swim, I think it is on September 12 (the weekend after Labor Day).  It is down at Oak Street Beach, your husband and son can come play on the beach while you swim......

It was great as always to see you out there!!!

I'm considering doing the Lake Geneva Tri on Sept 10th, possibly Oly distance if I can figure out how to get in more training.
Do you think I'd be ready? Also, do you think my hubby would go for it?
Oh, and it was great to see you and Laura also! If I become a pest just tell me to buzz off or something. I realized I just sort of invited myself and my friends to join you two. Sorry about that.

Of COURSE you'd be ready. And I'll be there to cheer the two of you on.

And what are you talking about, being a pest??!? Of course not!!!! Sheesh.

(and the Big Shoulders swim is actually Saturday, Sept 10th...I've had nightmares about that date ever since Marcie forced me into signing up for this event......)
