kath9dav - 2010-09-28 2:06 PM It's a matter of safety and possibly pacing, but that is a weak argument.  At my last tri a competitor received a 2 minute penalty for an ipod.

Having seen an iPod-wearing female competitor almost hit by a car at an intersection after she could not hear a police officer's SHOUTED warnings to stop, I think it's a pretty strong argument.  Major injury accidents have a way of discouraging municipalities approval of triathlon traffic permits.

A bicyclist was killed a short distance from my house this summer because he did not hear the train blasting its horn. Must have had it turned up pretty loud. I could care less what you listen to during training but I do not like being around others who have them on in a race since I have collided with another competitor who could not hear instructions from a race offical.

From the article: "Sandy Police say that witnesses reported the train's horn blasting several times before it hit the man who was wearing earphones from an MP3 player."

Ipods during a race is noo goood.  Enjoy the time during the race, chat to people, motivate them, be an introvert in your own time.

If you are concentrating on your music, you aren't concentrating on your form, which leads to injuries.

Ok...that I cannot argue with.  Probably brain damage as well.

I see many of the same arguments here for iPods, etc. as I do when I explain to people why listening to music is unsafe on bikes. I sometimes listen to music when I run on a treadmill, and watch a little television on long trainer rides, but it flat out is not safe to use audio devices during races or the majority of outdoor training.

Unfortunately, far too many people do see races as their own time.

The HM I ran earlier this year had the majority of the runners using ipods. I was pretty disappointed. I see longer races as a somewhat social event and you can't strike up conversations with random people when they are zoned out.

I was running that race with a friend and was bummed when she put her ipod on at the start. So much for having a talking buddy during the race. I might as well have been running by myself.

The ipods during races seem to be a more recent thing, running 6-7 years ago people were still willing to talk to you - but then ipods were a lot heavier/bulky then.

If I'd been personal-music-listenin' on the CA 70.3 run, I would have missed what was at worst a superfine, superfit piglet who just happened to still be on the course at the very late hour I was, too, and just decided he wanted to pace me and talk me through during the part of the run I was pretty much losing it.

At best, he was a truly divine messenger.

Good point!  I ran a full marathon about 7 years ago, and while I did have some music with me (this was before iPods, or at least before I had one) much of the time I didn't listen.  I met lots of great people, and some of them were my "running angels"...really got me through some dark miles where I thought I wasn't going to make it.  I ran two HMs this past summer, and talked to no one.  Much less social.

I don't listen to music during triathlons.  I far prefer to hear random people cheer me on!  That's what is so cool about tri-people.  I actually warn new triathletes that they will be weirded out by all the encouragement they receive.

Plus transition is complicated enough.  Sheesh.
