Subject: Triathlon tattoo regret?
I told myself that if I ever did a full IM I would get a tattoo. I have now completed the distance and am questioning if I will want it 10 years from now. Has anyone gotten a tri tattoo and regretted it? My question does not pertain to getting your high school girlfriends name tattooed on your knuckles by your next door neighbor. I know there is no regret for such well thought out plans. The question is for mostly sane adults who made a decision to do it.

I think if you worry you will regret it it's a red flag maybe you shouldn't get one.....?

I tell people to work out exactly what they want in a tattoo, get the price and the artist lined up and than wait 6 months.

If you still want it go and get it.

I have 6 tatts myself and while I don't regret them wouldn't go get them again if I didn't have them already.

I have a tattoo that *should* be regrettable.  It's not horrible (no, not an ex's name or a pink glitter unicorn or anything wierd), but it's simply not something I would pick today.

But I don't regret it b/c it reminds me of that time of my life

Mine is not visible in normal attire, so I have no reason to regret it b/c no one really sees it.

So that's the only thing I would recommend is to carefully consider the location and the impacts to your career, etc.

I have five tats and don't regret any of them.  One I might have done differently, but I don't regret it.  All of mine are in places that I can show if I want (i.e., wearing a bathing suit, shorts or short sleeves) or hide if I need to so you might want to think about that depending on where you work.  Some employers frown on tats.  My husband just did the half Ironman in Augusta and I'm trying to talk him into getting a 70.3 tat but I don't think he's gonna go for it.  LOL!

I agree with waiting.  last year I was going to get 140.6 with a design I made.  My wife asked me why at almost 50 would I want a tat after not having one my entire life.  We agreed that I would wait a few months.  A couple months went by I i changed my mind...never got the ink.

When I was in college I was a martial arts instructor that helped run a school with five other guys my age.  We had trained together since we were thirteen years old, so close to a decade of 3-5 times a week of high intensity exercise (sound familiar?).  We experienced a lot of intense emotions, half of which had to do with out of control adolescent hormones, but I thought martial arts would be a part of my life forever.  although I look back fondly at that time I have grown into a different person.  Everyone decided to get tattoos because martial arts was our way of life.  I changed my mind and I am extremely grateful that I don't have an enormous dragon tattoo on my back shoulder.  I'm 37 now and I would have to explain to everyone who asked that I used to be really into maritial arts.  Training helped make me into the person I am today and I thought I would do it forever.  Life is long.  You never know were it will take you.  Never in a million years would I think I would be posting on a Triathlete board getting ready to do my first sprint in March.  Perhaps you are different.  Maybe you will be doing KONA when you are seventy.  you are who you are because of the adventures you take, not by how you mark yourself.  That said I have no problem how people choose to live their life.  I think its fantastic you accomplished an Ironman.  I think its fantastic you have found something you love to do.  And I think its fantastic that neither you nor I know what adventures are in store for us in the future!  If you want to get inked do it and everybody else can suck it.

The only problem I can see is that if you end up getting old fat and lazy. You'll have to explain that at one time you're were a bad a**.  Of course this may also be an incentive to keep up the lifestyle if not in particular the sport.

Love this. And the final sentence. But it doesn't answer your question. Not having a tatoo - I can't speak from experience - but the suggestion that you get it all lined up/planned out etc and then wait six months sounds very reasonable.

I have three...and while none of them is a design I would get TODAY, I don't regret having them at all. They represent periods in my life, and I'm glad to have them.

The thing with a tattoo, ANY tattoo...ask yourself if you want something in that spot for the rest of your life. Then wait a few months, and ask again. THEN go and get it (or don't).

I definitely agree with waiting.

Get the design finalized, WAIT, then see if you still want the exact same design ... then Sharpie it on your body where you want the tat and wear it around for a week ... see if the design and placement really are exactly where you want it ...

I have a marathon tattoo that I cherish, and it was impulse. But the design (a turtle) I had actually wanted in that location for a long time.

And this is just me, but ... I'm not fond of M-dot because it's a corporate logo. If you want that in your design as a symbol of your accomplishment, of course, go right ahead! Just keep that in mind ... anything could happen, they could go bankrupt (I personally am developing a considerable distaste for WTC) ... also I think it's kind of ugly, aesthetically speaking.

just curious, but do people ever get a tattoo done in Henna first that way they can "try" it out for a week or two? Or is it all or nothing with the tattoo biz?

I have a couple of Tattoo's and like them both.  Waited until I was in my 30's for the first, had I picked one in my late teens early twenties it could have been something I would regret now.  Although since losing weight my binary tattoo is a little sloppy looking.

I have 2 of them, both in places that aren’t visible unless I take my shirt off.  You could give me a million dollars for getting them removed and i still wouldn’t. Both of mine tell a story and makes me think of my family.  My family is most important and you can’t put a dollar amount on your family.

I was discussing the tattoo with my wife and she just laughs it off. She thinks I should get one, but is convinced I will never do it. Her argument is partially valid. She bought me a 140.6 sticker for my car that I still have not put on. I can't decide where to put it. She is convinced that if I can't put a sticker on my car I will never put a tattoo on my body. Maybe I need to start with the sticker on the car then move to a sharpie version on my body. I wish I had the ballz to just get it done.

Ditto.

If I decide to get a tri tat, I won't look back.  If I get one and never do another tri, it's still a point in my life.  Tattoos are very personal.  As long as you like it, rock on.

The way some tattoo artists do work is with tracing paper--they draw the design onto the paper, then stick it to your body, peel paper off--the design remains, and that's what they start tattooing on.

If you Sharpie the design on instead of then tattooing it on, same thing. Many artists will do this for you for a small fee.

I'll echo what other people have said about waiting first, and then up it to a year. Most of the kids I've mentored can't wait to get a tattoo, and most of the time they don't know what they are doing. They get something that's mostly frivolous done by a shoddy artist. At least after a year you can do the research and get it done well. I have several tattoos that I plan on eventually getting, but since I'm really picky about what I want to put on my body and I want to design all of them myself I still haven't gotten them. At one point I was planning on getting my whole back covered a la Japanese yakuza, but it never was a priority for me not because of the pain or regretting it, but because I can't justify spending so much money!

I only have one tattoo that's on my back that's the kanji for "oni," which is hard to explain to people whenever they ask me about it. (This is usually when I'm at the beach or pool). And I usually need to explain it thoroughly since the short answer is "demon" or "ogre" which isn't exactly right. But other than having to explain what it means all the time, I don't regret having it at all.

im all about tattoos.  i think they are very personal and a good "landmark" for an experience you had in your life.  my first big piece was on my forarm and im currently working on adding to it.  This year has been a huge transition in my life so i feel its a good time to get it done.

when i finish a HIM and IM, ill be getting a tattoo for those as well..plus they make a great conversation starter haha

big tattoos..not for me. although for some people it really looks great.

BUT... location, location, location...

My 3hrs worth in the chair covers a good portion of my right outer calf and I love it.
my friend's 10 mins in the chair to have a dotted line around his throat with a small pair of scissors at one end and the words 'cut here' at the other end... not so much.

I'm sleeved and then some.....I love every single milimeter of ink. There is a deep meaning to all of it. All of it is custom, no flash. Unless I am in long sleeves alot of it is visible. And I like it this way. I've been into tats all my life and knew since I was a little kid that I would have some. Got one, then just kinda kept going. My oldest tat is 22 years old, youngest 1 month old. I'm 40 now, I doubt I will ever regret any of it. As years go by I actually love them all more.

When you get to this much ink, significant events often end up inked on, because its just part of you. I feel less naked and less vulnerable then when I was not inked. This is impossible to describe to anyone other than someone who is also heavily tatt-ed.

A friend of mine actually photo shopped all my ink off so I could send a pic to my mother without giving her a heart attack...it was strange to see all the naked skin.

I'm a huge supporter of thinking of what you'd like, then 'sleeping' on it so to speak.
