How much mileage do you put on a running shoe before it's recommended that you replace them?

This is my first year running, and I estimate that I've racked up maybe 150-175 miles so far this season.
I figure I can probably run on these shoes through winter and then replace them in the spring?

I shoot for 300 for my training shoes, but can kind of go by feel.

3 months.

When I hit 3 months and 2 weeks my knees start hurting and get progressively worse each run.

I run in Asics 21XX and the last 2 pair of shoes I've been able to get between 325 and 350 miles out of them.  I'm not that heavy (150 lbs) which probably helps somewhat.

I just checked mine, they are at 477. I will try and wait till spring. Create my own minimalist shoe.

It depends. There are a variety of factors including weight, gait pattern, surfaces run on, shoe type, etc. There are people who can only get 150 miles and others can get over 1000. No standard answer applies to everyone.

When I first started running I was a heavy heel striker and shoes lasted about 150 miles at most. After I switched to a midfoot strike my shoes typically last around 300 miles. However, about half my running is on dirt/gravel trails and that tends to break them down more quickly. In the winter when there is lots of sand/grit on the roads shoes wear out faster as well.

A person who does lots of treadmill running would likely get more mileage.

The range is 3-500, but I like to do it around 300, so on the low end.  If you can tell the difference when you put on new shoes, then it's time.

I've also had knee surgery and would rather be safe than sorry.

300 to 500mi for training shoes.
But I only weigh 135lbs, so I always take mine to 500.  By then I can really tell the difference.
I've got over 300 mi on my current pair of Nike Lunarglides (my 1st nike's ever) and they seem to be holding up pretty well.  I'll be able to get a couple hundred more out of them easy.

got about 400 on my last pair (the first pair I tracked mileage for) and at 400, did a run and my knees hurt after, so swapped in a new pair.  I put 500 on those without issue, but just started with a replacement.  Now I notice they feel a little better, but it's not like I'll hurt myself on the old ones, just probably wouldn't run long or fast in them.  Makes me think I pulled my last pair a little prematurely (so my knees were achey from running not from the shoes).  FWIW, I've been running on Nike's Lunar series (first were Run Avants, then LunarGlide and LunarGlide 2) and have been between 150 and 160.

I'd say, have a new pair ready, and when you feel like the old ones may be going bad, swap the new ones in for a run.  No difference - keep running the old.  Big difference - stay on the new.  Slight difference/can't tell - use your gut.

I weigh 258 lbs and I go 300-400.

I run mostly on a treadmill and the shoes will look nearly brand new, but will not feel soft and cushioned anymore.

totally depends on the person, the shoes, when/where you run, etc.

I have my normal ltwt trainers that get 400 or so before i should replace (have run more though), and a pair of flats that i am running in that have over 800 on them and look/feel new.

I got 800+ in my first pair of Nike Free's and I think 900 in the last pair.

Could you explain a bit more about what you mean by feel? I have about 400 miles on my current shoes and don't have knee pain but they feel really soft and I think my feet are a bit more fatigued.

Is it just that shoes keep getting softer or is there something else to watch for?

Thanks for your help.

I have used the same shoes for years (Asics Kayanos), I used to get 225-250 miles out of each pair but now am only getting 150 miles from them, no idea why.  And I am pretty pissed because they are the most expensive.

Everyone is different.  I know my shoes are done when I get foot and ankle pains.  I buy new shoes and the pain goes away.  I am very envious of the people who get 300+ miles from their shoes.

Like said above, the general thought I have found is 300-400.  As far as the shoes getting old, I had a pair that were fine until a nice little 12 mile run.  My foot was VERY sore towards the end of the run, and I could actually feel where the shoe had broken down.  I had to take a 2 week break from running from it.  I like to play it safe now....300 Miles and I have a new pair ready.
