Pre-race routine:

Same ole. Same ole.
Event warmup:

Did maybe 50 meters to get used to the cooler water.
Swim
  • 08m 11s
  • 328 yards
  • 02m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

Guess I didn't prepare myself enough mentally for the swim. I swam more at Bridgeland which was 500 meters than I did today. I had a freak out moment and swallowed a bunch of water. Kayak was watching me closely at this point. I did manage to finish and that's what matters.
What would you do differently?:

not freak out!
Transition 1
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

A little slower here than normal but it was also a tad longer transition. And of course my spot was completely on the other side of transition.
Bike
  • 27m 45s
  • 10 miles
  • 21.62 mile/hr
Comments:

So this is where being a slower swimmer doesn't help my bike. Course was packed by the time I was riding. Constantly saying "on your left" which I guess isn't a bad thing. ;) I was extremely happy with my bike split. Legs were nice and rested and I could tell. Thanks Coach.

The course was short though so my bike split wasn't quite that fast. Powertap data shows 9.5 miles @ 27:17. Average watts - 139 - 20.8mph. Goal was to break 20.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Other then almost knocking over the whole rack...nothing!
Run
  • 25m 16s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Eric and I decided I would wear my Garmin for the data only. I changed the settings to not show my pace. I only looked at the distance during the run and I think this really helped me mentally. I felt pretty strong the whole time. Amazing what happens when I just listen to my body.

Garmin data shows 25:04 - 8:22/mile. Goal was 8:30/mile.
Post race
Warm down:

Talked to fellow triathletes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Physically I felt great. I think the mental factor during the swim continues to be my greatest struggle.

Event comments:

Great race that has been around for years in Houston.
