I hate having to remember to go get my prescription every month from the doctors office, why can't they just fax it to the pharmacy?

I was almost positive this thread was going to be a rant about having to chase down some YaYo that wasn't actually a poor mixture of No-Doz and Laxatives...

It is a huge waste of time.   Besides how can it be more secure than faxing it to the pharmacy?  If they just fax it the patient never touches it, it can't get lost or stolen.  It is trivial to develop a system that would let them check that the script came from a legitimate source.  Ah well.

I agree I have to do the same for my sons meds it is rather annoying plus it costs me a Dr. visit each time.

Because it's Schedule 2 and requires a special tamperproof prescription pad.  At least it does in Texas.

Not in PA.  We used to have to send a quarterly report to Harrisburg, though, of all the schedule II's we wrote for.  THAT was fun.

Anyway, if it helps, it is a huge PIA for docs (or at least me) too.  I was glad when the DEA allowed me to write for 3 months worth of stimulants, even if it still has to be on 3 separate scripts, with a notation about when it is allowed to be filled.  I hate having to write a new Rx for a patient who is stable, with no changes needed, who I am only seeing a couple of times a year for monitoring, instead of just writing for the refills for the year the way I do with antidepressants, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers.  Being a child psychiatrist means the greatest proportion of my patients have ADHD, which means stimulants, which means schedule II.

Yep, see the inconvenience for docs and patients, esp. in a case where it's a long-term patient on long-term medication, etc.

I wonder how you could revise the laws for that ...

Here in Indonesia, ANY drug primarily indicated for 'psychiatric' use is the equivalent of Schedule II. Unless the prescription comes from a psychiatrist or a neurologist, they can only be doled out in amounts of 20 (and no, they don't usually have different mg/g doses). Even the best and largest pharmacies are often understocked on run-of-the-mill antidepressants or antipsychotics because because they're so tightly controlled.

I struggle with how pain medication is treated. On the one hand, I think it's grossly and appallingly overprescribed and overused in the U.S. Here, I think, it's grossly and appallingly underprescribed. People are expected to recover from major invasive surgery or bear extremely painful conditions on paracetamol (like Tylenol) or if you're lucky, you can get a prescription NSAID (all of them, including ibuprofen, are prescription here).

The upside is that (if you can recover from whatever it is) people follow instructions and heal up damned fast. They get the rest they need, and there's ZERO payoff in staying sick, and you want to get out of pain as quickly as possible.

Also, in the extremely rare event you do get your hands on narcotic pain relief (not administered in an emergent setting), it's going to be either codeine or Ultram. That's it. In small doses, 10-count or less.

Do away with any prescription needed. Do away with all drug laws. The abuse of drugs is self correcting.

I'm hoping that you just left off the sarc font. Honestly, I believe part of the reason for drugs to be scheduled is to remind the prescriber about the seriousness of the meds.  I have seen too many people Rx'd abusable drugs and then become addicted to believe that letting it all be self-managed is a good idea.  If the docs need to be better educated and aware, what makes anyone think that lay-people will take it more seriously?  Instead, they will be saying "it must be safe, or it would be restricted".

For husband it isn't the dr. visit, its that the dr. never seems to get it completely correct, and here in CA if it isn't completely, absolutely correct, the pharmacy cannot call the dr. to get the correction, a new prescription needs to be made.  For someone that will probably be on this drug the rest of his life, it is frustrating.  We solved the problem, by having the dr. put a photo copy of the correct rx in his file, so he now just copies it, and changes the date.  It use to also be frustrating on the date restriction.  You had 3 days from the date they wrote the Rx.  They have since extended that time out a bit.

I think there should be a way to do an electronic Rx...some secure way, that has to have the dr.s pin code or special Rx number or something...some way to help out those.  I do agree that the dr. must send it in each month, so that there is contact and control with the patients.
