***** note: cleaning up old race reports *****
Well, one of these days I will figure out this Ironman thing. In some aspects, yesterday was very similar to my race 2 years ago - GI issues (stomach cramps) ruined my run.
I was very happy with my swim. I got into the mix of things and never had any issues. I was surprised at my time as I felt like it was much faster, but overall it was good. The bike was also very good. I kept my HR low and raced my race. I think the wind probably cost me 20 minutes. All in all I got off the bike according to plan. I wanted to be off the bike with a chance at sub 13 providing I could run a 4:30ish marathon. That is exactly where I was. The other good thing about getting off the bike is I nailed my nutrition according to plan - 5 1/2 bottles of Infinit and 2 packs of shot blocks.
The run on the other hand leaves me wondering that I am doing something wrong - nutrition?, hydration?, mental toughness?, physical toughness?, training???? I ran the first 5 miles right at 10ish pace and was actually feeling very good. Then somewhere between mile 5-6 I got stomach cramps/gas like I have never felt before. I took 2 Imodium, but they didn't help. The pain was so bad that all I could do is walk. At that point my HR spike and I couldn't get it to come down no matter what. Whenever I tried to jog, I almost doubled over in pain. So, here it is - walk 20 miles to finish the race. And that is what I did. It was cold, rainy, and miserable, but I was here to finish what I started. When I finally got to Sherman street, I made sure to take in the finish line experience (unlike last time) and I loved every minute of it. The best part is Shannon was there to catch me.
Oh well - eventful day and I think that's the point of Ironman. One girl I was riding with for a bit was asking me if we were almost finished with the bike. I said yes, and if it wasn't for the wind we would already be done. Her response - it's the Ironman it's not supposed to be easy. That sums everything up right there.
