Subject: Wildflower 2011
My Boyfriend and I have decided to try for the 2011 Wildflower event in late April and wondered if anyone else had done it and if so what they thought.  My guy is going for the MTB event as he has compressed disks and can't run very far but I'm not a very talented mountain biker as evident by the stitches currently in my knee from our last outing.  Is the mtb course fun and how technical?  How is the oly course?  I would like to hang with him and do the mtb and then have fun on Saturday night with everyone, but if mtb course too technical I will do oly on Sunday instead.

Camping or get a room, any opinions?  Also is it fun to hang out on Saturday night after that day's events are done or should we only get accomodations for Friday night and go elsewhere to explore the area after events (since we will have our bikes with us)?  I know these are kinda broad questions  but any info and opinions are greatly appreciated.

MTB course isn't technical at all.  My wife did it as her first tri, and she doesn't do any mountain biking, and very little road biking  It's a fun, tough little course.  Hardest sprint I've done, mostly because it is hilly and the MTB is heavy.  There are a couple dirt sections that are kind of tricky, butno big deal.  Run is rolling hills.

Haven't done the Oly, but done the long, so familiar with the area.  Also a tough hilly bike and run but fun.

We camped, but you have to be up for that sort of thing, and carry in your own food to cook your meals.  You can buy stuff down at the lake, but it's a haul up and down a steep hill.  We're also with a group, so it's fun to hang out all day.  THe roads are pretty much closed down saturday for the race so you wouldn't be able to get anywhere anyway until late in the day

I did the Oly this year and will be doing the Long Course in 2011. The Oly course is great, just make sure to train for lots of hills on the bike and the run. I'm from San Francisco and ride hills all the time and the hills at Wildflower were pretty major even for me.

I'd camp if I were you, as the nearest hotel is about an hour's drive from the race site. A few of my tri club members did stay in a hotel but you have to get into the park very early in the morning before they close the roads. Also, the atmosphere of camping and racing is really fun especially if it is your first time at Wildflower.

And now it's a qualifier for ITU worlds in 2011 (i.e., Silverman), so I bet long course sells out next year

Yup, I am one of those 300 (along with a lot of people from my tri club). Wanted to take advantage of the early entry.

hey there
like a few others, i'm making the jump from Oly to 70.3 @ Wildflower this year.  (eek!)  i got a free entry by magically winning my tri club's raffle last year, so i was pumped.  not so sure that Wildflower was the best choice for my first 70.3 ... perhaps a bit of masochism got in there ... oh well; too late now! Laughing

and wow, already >400 people registered for long course ... and open registration hasn't started yet!

anyway, just a little hello.  Smile

I've signed up already for the MTB course. It will be my first triathlon ever. I now have less than five months to learn how to swim without fins or poolsides! Surprised

Looks like I'm in for the LC. Havent done anything since IM St. George so I need to get my butt in gear. We are getting a room in Paso instead of camping. How is it driving in race morning? Seem like it could be ugly.

No wildflower for me this year, although I had my fill the last couple years. Personally, I say camp (to those of you considering otherwise) since that is very much a part of what makes wildflower unique. Nothing like schlepping your bike up and down the dirt hill to and from transition before and after the race . It's something about those inconveniences that make for a better experience and story afterward.

I remember lots of things about Wildflower long, but one thing burned in my memory is the cruelty of the post race hike back to camp.  Followed by the amazing taste of [your beverage of choice]

I won't be there this year, maybe next....

^^^^^ Totally! I actually cried pushing my bike back up the dirt hill in 2010 after I raced the Oly, I was so spent. A nice spectator took pity on me and helped me carry it to the top so I could ride back to my campsite. Not looking forward to the trek after long course this year.

i did too!  pushing my bike up that damn dirt singletrack path on that hill .... my husband met me halfway and took my bag, but the bike-pushing near killed me.  (and i only did the oly!)

on the little survey they sent out a couple of weeks ago, i lent a paragraph of my opinion to Tri-California re: that trek back to camp/parking.  at least it could be marked so i knew where i was going!

masochistic me, signed up again this year .... long course this time.

wildflower oly last year, was great to do and finish. but i ain't doing it this year! the course is pretty darn tough, especially the run. lynch hill is no treat right off the bat. but it was an awesome experience.

if the organizers were nice, they would figure out a way to get a shuttle going before the last runner is off the course! walking up that hill after a day of racing was brutal.

enjoy it!
