Scrawny, you're friend Katie & I are working on some swim dates in January. In the meatime, give the nod drill some time in the pool.

I agree what someone else mentioned if you could put a link to a video it would really help.   I was getting confused reading it.

The cues I use and to have one goggle out of the water and one in. which makes me lift my chin a touch to breath and most importantly keeps my head in the water.

I got some video of this drill when paleandscrawny brought his friends to my pool...with their permission I'll post. My description of one fellow's breathing stroke after working through these focuses was that his right sided breathing stroke was "sublime".

I'll try to get them up this week.

Also shamelessly bumping this thread for some people who have recently asked swim breathing questions.

Bump.

Just to say - I still haven't found the discipline to actually do the drills. And I don't know that I've managed to translate it into actual time gains.

But I've been focussing a lot on relaxing through the shoulders and just 'laying my head on the pillow.'

I wouldn't exactly call it 'effortless,' but I finished my most struggle-free 1500m the other day. Jumped out of the pool feeling energised and relaxed where normally I'd finish breathless, sore and spluttering.

Thanks for this.  I printed it out and took it to the pool today.  Honestly shaved 5" off my best on the first 100 after doing the drills.  Felt amazing.  No more brakes being applied on each breath.

Thanks so much. I was practicing some drills on Saturday an isolated the problem to breathing. Now I know probably what was causing the problem and some strategies for fixing it.

"struggle free, energized and relaxed" is as good an outcome as any I've seen.

Congrats & keep on practicing.

This is a great thread, Suzanne. Any chance you could turn it into a BT article?

I advocate practicing "breathing meditation" (just another form of breathing drills) and I really think what you've outlined here is helpful for folks not just in swim training, but to ease into OWS for newer swimmers. Doing focused breathing the first bit of an OWS during races can also really calm the anxiety that can set it (sometimes even for seasoned swimmers) and this is good stuff to do, especially doing it in practice so you're already used to it.

Having a good swim start can make an enormous difference for the rest of the race, and while it may SEEM like you're going slower by taking a few yards at the beginning to BREATHE, the smoothness and efficiency far more than makes up for any deficit, which would certainly be worse if you were thrashing around and trying to get a hold of yourself with your HR skyrocketing.

I have tried some of this this week and found it to be really helpful.

At times I really get the not lifting my head move. I have been able to breathe by just turning my head and sometimes I don't even have my whole mouth out of the water.

Thank you for the post!

Me too. I even try to keep one side of the goggles in the water when I breathe.

Love it...it's a great feeling to just sneak that water over the surface and know that you're OK. This trnaslates great to racing when you may get water splashed or pushed into your face as you breath...having water "in your face" doesn't always preclude breathing .
