I thought I would check out the new gym that just opened up nearby. Gorgeous huge facility.
I asked for a tour and she began by showing me the too small pool. Too bad. Oh well......show me the rest of the gym while I am here.
She shows me the state of the art machines in a beautiful, vast, light filled setting. Yeah,  maybe I can just overlook the small pool? I was intrigued.
Until.......she tells me about the dress code. Huh? No tank tops or any such garment. T shirts MUST be worn. She proceeded to tell me this was so that all the members can feel "comfortable". They did not want certain "attitudes" developing, did not want members that are less fit to feel intimidated, did not want "big guys" in muscle shirts etc .

Personally, this is a deal breaker. I overheat VERY easily beacuse I do not sweat .
I always end up taking off my shocking , unacceptable tank top and just running in my equally shocking sports bra!

What do you think of this policy?
Does anybody belong to a gym with a dress code?

Discuss.

i think a policy within reason is fine, this is not within reason.. you're there to strengthen your body... do these same people ask everyone else to not take off their shirts at the beach/pool? or does everyone have to shower covered up?

crazy..

I have never heard of a gym with a dress code. I don't see how that could help people to feel more comfortable. In the gym it becomes obvious very quickly who is "less fit". I would absolutely not belong to a gym like that. What's next? Do you only have 20 lb dumbells so nobody feel less strong? Do the treadmills all only go at a 3.0 speed? Personally, I am more motivated when I see people in better shape than myself.

well, it's their gym, and they can make whatever rules they want.

But I do agree with you.  The less you wear, the better.

She also implied that it was so that people would not feel like they are being checked out, and risk getting hit on.
Funny.....I have been a member of my current gym for years and usually work out in a sports bra and shorts. I have NEVER felt uncomfortable and I have NEVER been hit on.

gym I belonged to back home had a dress code.  It didn't allow hats (gang thing) and the boxers had to wear shirts when not in the sparring room.   It was great, being more of a boxing gym it kept a lot of folks away, it was cheap, and not many knew that they had an agreement with the swanky gym down the road for us to use the pool.  all for $50/month.

My gym used to have a sign in the ladies locker room (I assume the same sign was in the men's) that RIPPED CLOTHING was NOT allowed in the gym. I couldnt understand that one. I dont really wear ripped clothing as a rule but (dont ask me why) I resented that they might police that, I complained, the sign disappeared.

Is it Planet Fitness? They have some rules to make sure everyone is "comfortable", including something they call a "Lunk Alarm" that blares and flashes like a fire engine whenever someone behaves like a "Lunk". An article says they define a as this: "Lunk , n, [slang], One who Grunts, Drops Weights, or JUDGES"

Apparently, they don't have an irony alarm.

My school, a Baptist university, requires that all people entering the gym have sleeves and a towel; however, the same dress code does not apply to those in aerobics or cycling classes offered by the gym, so I don't really understand the code and I find it quite annoying.  Showing your shoulders is not scandalous, IMHO.

As far as the sports bra and [not] being hit on... I run in a sports bra in the summer and I've noticed an interesting progression - the faster I get, the less people honk and yell at me as I'm running.

my gym requires a shirt but it can be a singlet or tank top.  Women are fine in sports tops.

I'm in sweat pants and a T-shirt when I work out. I never wear shorts. No one needs to see any more of me than necessary.

We live in a very conservative part of the country. While I appreciate the female form, it's easier and less distracting for everyone to wear appropriate clothes.

I take it the movie FlashDance was banned there as well.
Craziness.

Would be a complete deal breaker for me too. I can understand certain dress code rules, but no tank tops is absolutely ridiculous.  A gym should be out working out not about what you wear. THEY are the ones who making it more about looks than the fitness.

Club Ugly?
(Good looking need not apply. Or no flaunting anyway.)

Always seemed to me some people in gyms were only there to look or to be looked AT...

Of course, the pool thing would be my biggest hang-up, but the no bare shoulders thing would be a helluva red flag!

Probably already said, but this sounds like an extension of the grade-school "we don't keep score" mentality. Can't risk making any one feel like they came in second place!

Preposterous.

I actually think those are good rules from a hygiene perspective. I've watched people get on the weight equipment right after the treadmill, dripping with sweat, give a token wipe down of the machine when they through, and then watch some poor lady in a tank top get on the machine. I also witnessed a kid in baggy shorts, rip his pants off on the close grip rowing machine (the s-hook caught his shorts)! Not being a fashion model, and having worked out at some very hard core gyms (combat boots, sweat pants, sweat shirt with sleeves cut-off), I really don't care, but don't show any skin, it just makes be think of bacteria transfer.

You think bacteria can't transfer through your sweaty clothes just because they're covering your skin?
