Pre-race routine:

First time in Vegas so did too much walking and crushing beer. A few of us from the BT Mentor Group flew in to meet up and run. AWESOME TIME!!!!! Very cool to meet some of the people that hang out together on here.

TrevorC came in from Calgary and wanted to run the Canadian 5k Sunday which consisted of meeting a bunch of neighbors from the north out front of the MGM and running 2.5K down the strip, hanging out at the Welcome To Vegas sign taking group pics and singing the Canadian Anthem, which it seems only half the people there knew. Then walking or running or a combination of both back to the MGM.

I won the American division. An 8 year old girl gave me some trouble at the start but with a lot of effort I was able to drop her like a bad habit. Third place went to a stray dog who I think cut the course but since there were only three of us I only bitched about for a few hours... and then again later in the day after several beers.
Event warmup:

Strolled on down to the starting area, ~ 1 mile. I decided to check my phone and camera and a long sleeve shirt (glad I did). I probably should have done more than a stroll as the lines were full of slackers like me that didn't get there early enough. By the time I got my bag checked Cher was singing the National Anthem. She finished up and the gun went off. Uh-oh... had to haul on over to my corral. Stopped at a porto-potty and got into the corral as they were starting.

I love perspective. There were two people in the bag check line that really stood out.
- One was some guy that would just not stop complaining... The line was to long, it was to slow, the volunteers were not moving fast enough, it was cold, and on and on. He had two legs.
- The other was some woman who just stood there quietly with this awesome smile on her face. She'd high five a few people that walked by her. Or return a thumbs up from a fellow athlete. Or mention what an incredible morning it was to those that greeted her. She had one leg.

The plan was to hang around zone 3 for 10 miles and see how I felt from there. I thought about turning it up around mile 8 mile but stuck to the plan and glad I did because the last two miles were so freakin' hard. The last 1/4 mile my stomach was a wreck and getting a bit dizzy.

My favorite spectator was the really old lady smoking a cigarette yelling at us in a raspy voice "go on with your healthy self". hahahahaha!!!!! thanks old lady! enjoy your smoke.

Running on the strip was tons of fun. Lots of good sites and great crowds.
What would you do differently?:

Not eat three gels. I knew I shouldn't have done this, not sure why I did.
I think I might have had a stronger finish if I throttled it back just a little on the first half.

All in all this was a good race and a great time!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Hung around the finish area waiting for my wife to finish. It was her first half marathon. Very proud of her... she's awesome on so many levels!!!!

Walked back to the hotel to shower and grab a beer. Met up with kt65 and cruised back down to cheer on trevor and his hot wife as they finished up their first marathon. I think it was really nice of her to let him beat her.

Another awesome get together. One more 1/2 marathon in march before Ironman. Lets see if we can't break 1:50.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Don't think I've been running enough since Augusta 70.3, long runs consisted of a 10 miler and a couple 8 miler's.

Weight needs to get down a bit. I'm not putting any pounds on but staying around 235.

Event comments:

Rock-n-Roll events can be a bit crowded but they are a blast, well organized and bring a lot of people together which offers some great opportunities to meet fellow runners and talk sh*t.

Course: Out and Back on The Strip. It was closed for the race which was pretty cool! We started and ended at Mandalay Bay with a little loop down at the other end on Freemont. Pretty flat, a slight grade up coming home in a few areas. Bands all along the course were cool.

So, when you selected "Too much" under "Drinking" - did you mean before the race, during the race, or after the race? Wink

Great race and RR! Congratulations on the PR!

Terrific job setting a strategy and sticking with it!  Little disappointed you didn't puke at the end, but there is always that Spring race.

PS Three less beers the night before and that 1:50 would have been yours.  Just sayin'
