Chris, just saw that you DNF'd the REV3. What happened? Do you have a RR up?

Sorry I haven't been around much. I've been super busy with buying a new car, and moving, and not training, and interning, and working full time... Luckily, everything will calm down on June 5th, after I move for good. I will be back and involved in no time.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Checking in...sorry I've been checked out...HOWEVER - I finished my race yesterday!

Feels pretty good to complete a first Olympic Tri at age 53....I don't know my total time yet, as it's not posted, but I'm pretty sure I wasn't the slowest finisher.  Since that was my goal, I feel it was a success.....

I'll post a race picture as soon as I have one....  Thanks ALL for your help. W.

Ouch, sorry about your ankle. Give it a few days to heal up. I twisted mine back in December. You might try a compression wrap too. Great job on your ride!

Had my first sprint of the season today. It went great, weather cooperated and I didn't make any bone head mistakes so that is nice Next race for me is the HIM June 15th. Nothing but long rides and runs for a while for me!

Race Report!!

Yes, I'd like to hear how you did too!

Hi everyone!

I'm still training, but unfortunately all my races for this year have to be dropped due to a 9 month deployment I am about to leave for . I may be able to squeeze in one, but that is a very slim chance. Good luck to the rest of you guys for your 2011 season. I will have to find some alternatives to swimming since there probably won't be a pool where I'm going. Also looks like I will be back on a stationary cycle and possibly a treadmill.

See you all next season!

Andrew

Races and how you feel about them (success wise) should always be based on a personal level.  You can't do anything about who shows up to the race!

Make sure to post the pictures and link to the RR!

Quiet around these parts! Hope everyone is well.

Question for the cyclists out there. I want to learn more about my bike, maintenance, tuning it up myself, maybe eventually doing my own upgrades, etc. Do any of you have any sort of resources that you would consider invaluable? A book to invest in? A website? Anything would be a huge help, because I know next to nothing. Flat or dropping a chain, I'm fine. Beyond that, I'm in big trouble... haha

Completed my HIM on Sunday! Now I'm giving myself one week to be lazy and catch up on all the stuff I have neglected around the house for the last 4 months.

Maybe I'm not being lazy at all LOL......

Haha, I get sucked into too many threads on Tri Talk and over at Slowtwitch for my own good

The best place to start is "ZINN and the Art of the tri bike" (or road bike) it's a very handy book that covers everything from basic repair to re-assembling the whole deal. Another place to never forget about is Parktools website, they have tons of primers on just about any question you'll ever have. Also, the gear section on BT is pretty helpful, plenty of the guys on here are pretty good wrenches. If all else fails, I've built 2 bikes for myself and do all my own repairs, so you can always shoot me a message.

Probably most important though is just to get in there are mess with it. There really isn't a lot you can screw up big time (shimano components especially are extremely hard to "break" by tampering with them... which is a big PITA if you are like me and want to take them completely apart) that your LBS can't get fixed pretty quick.  The biggest things to remember, always shift into your smallest cog and smallest chainring before you take tension off of the cables  And if your bike has internal cable routing, NEVER PULL THE HOUSING OUT OF THE FRAME UNTIL YOU HAVE A "FISHING" WIRE RAN THROUGH IT. Those two things will save you tons of headache down the road.

Thanks for the info, Chris! I'll definitely look into ZINN. And regarding taking the bike apart... I've never been mechanically inclined, so I'm just nervous doing that. I assume it'd be a lot easier if I had a stand for the bike, eh?

yeah, bike stand would be ideal. A hanging rack works fairly good too.

The good news is bikes really haven't "changed" much in the past... well... ever really So even on top of the line stuff (well.. maybe not Di2) you are messing with technology that has been easy (and reliable) enough to be the standard for 20+ years. (with some minor upgrades of course)
