1: I'm 30. Did my first race at 28. I started doing triathlon because I was trying to move away from following more risky passions that kept getting me hurt. It was fairly inconvenient to be injured and trying to help out with a toddler. I also need the regiment of a training plan to exercise regularly.

2: I think the $160k average income statistic is for Ironman distance athletes. I also wonder if that's household or individual income. I don't meet the average. Individually or as a household. I think the cost to enter the sport depends a lot on where you are coming from. I was already heavily invested in cycling, and surfing (I swam in my surfing wetsuit to start). I already owned running shoes since I had started running when traveling for work. My only cost to get into the sport was race entries.

3: I'm married with 1 kid, and #2 on the way.

Bigfuzzydoug - 2010-12-30 6:14 AM  Compared to a sport like skiing which requires travel to the slopes, gear and lift tickets or golf which after clubs can be as much as $50 a weekend - I don't find triathlon to be all that expensive at all.

This is true. Even sitting on yer butt watching cable can be $75-100ish/month depending on channels.

It's funny, we often don't go skiing because 'it will take all day' and yet if we do a long run, we're wasted for the rest of the day afterwards. LOL.

I'm 44, DH is 46
under median $
I have completed a tri, DH has not. I like DUs, DH has no interest in competing, and would prefer cheering, photo taking, and providing more cowbell. We train at similar speeds, so it all works out.

47.  Married.  SAHM, so USAT doesn't have a demographic for me.  Hubby does well $$ because he works zillions of hours and trains, and also races so no problems.  I am blessed.  My sons are also USAT members with no income, so we probably all bring down the demographic.

37 going on 38.  I didn't read all the other responses, but my best bet is that those that are middle age finally have kids old enough to not be up all night as infants and are getting to the point where they say "man, I've got to get in shape like I was in my 20's".

But I could be way off....

I've been 30 for 15 years now.

But I've only done one triathlon.  I'll get back into it though, I'm sure.  Just other priorities at the moment.

I'm 29, although according to USAT I'm 30 this year (rat bast*rds - no I'm not bitter about this or anything). I have a four year old son who I have the majority of the time and I'm divorced (or rather will be very soon). 2010 was my first season of TRIs and what led me to start training was the need to escape...time for myself. Once I started running, figured why not swim and then why not bike nd hell, if I'm going to do all this, I mine as well have a goal or something. Did my first race and was hooked. As for the income, well below both average statistics mentioned but I do well enough to squeak by and with the genrousity of people who love and care about me, I've done just fine in the gear department. That's not to say that I don't dream about an awesome Tri bike, because, well, I do. Someday...when I grow up. Sigh.

I've wondered that, too. I almost never see the question on surveys, what is your "individual" income range... it is always "household" from what I remember. While both figures are the same for a single person like me, how many of us would be closer to that average if we added another yearly salary?

As a 46-year-old, I'm probably MOP in our local club.  We've got a large contingent older than I am and a small-but-growing younger contingent.

160K?  BOP for me.

Married with 4 boys and now a grandson.

Why?  Getting established and doing all the "parent" things (soccer, scouts, PTA) take time and $$.  The 20-something's still feel invincible and are more likely to be involved in league sports (volleyball, softball) if they're single and active, but more often just going out with friends.  Approach 40 and have the doc start talking about beta blockers and Lipitor and you realize you've got two choices...

I'm 36 as of last week.

I make about half the average.

Married with 3 kiddos.  I train, but haven't raced  (tri) since Aug 2008.  I've done a couple of road races.    I've had a couple injuries and stuff always competes for $$ with race fees.
