Subject: Random Question: How old are you?

This is going to sound a bit random, but in DC I've notice that most of the triathletes that I know of (through the club and a few races) are in their 30s.

To elicit a discussion and to better understand why in the 30s+, a few questions for all of you!:

1. Is that the case in most cities in the United States? Someone from our DC Tri club told me that most of the people in our club are in fact, much younger that most cities! It feels like i'm the only guy in my 20s in my club.

2. Could the reason be because of the financial needs this sport requires? I did read somewhere that the average income of a triathlete is around $160k.

3. What about married vs. non-married? More singles than couples?

I could be totally off base, but I've always wanted to know. I love the community and I love the sport, but to me it just seems like everyone I meet is at least in the 30s. Thoughts?

1. No, that is not the case. In fact (as the person from your club pointed out) most amateur/recreational triathletes are actually in their 40s.

2. Many reasons for this, and yes, the financial outlay is one of the reasons why people tend to be older entering this sport. Other reasons include: more life stability at that age, triathlon's not a big (or at all) HS/college sport, it's a good 'midlife crisis' sport to take up (several reasons for that) ... I'm sure others can supply more reasons. There's actually a big review of this somewhere, with lots of numbers ...

3. Tough question. Someone posed this on CoJ before, but ... again, this age category is more likely to be in stable/committed relationships. Doesn't quite fit into a married/single paradigm.

The largest age groups tend to be the 35-40, and 40-45. I started in my 20's though (in 1984).

2. Could the reason be because of the financial needs this sport requires? I did read somewhere that the average income of a triathlete is around $160k.

Partly. And a whole host of other reasons that Yanti enumerated very well. But this sport CAN be done on the cheap, as many college athletes can attest.

3. What about married vs. non-married? More singles than couples?

You get both. I'm single, but not for long...

Maybe it just SEEMS like they're all in their 30's...

1.  I'm 32, although not for long as I'll be aged up at the beginning of the year, like everyone else.

2.  I am on the much lower end of that average.

3.  I'm married, but not to a couple, just to one person.  No sense in having ANOTHER person to disappoint.

I just 'look' like I'm 30.

But I'm actually 40. Single. Not looking.

24, and i know quite a few people my age who run marathons, most dont seem interested or are unable to afford to do a tri.

Single, sigh, complicated

I started running when i was in 4th grade ( whatever age that is) because of weight issues and have been on and off ever since (longest break was a year). Seems like not much has changed since then.

2. Don't make enough money but still manage to do tri's.

3. Married but I told my wife I had a 100 year renewal clause in our marriage contract (surprisingly she thought it was a good idea ;>.  77 years to go.

Ageless is an age, right?    Let's see, I'm 52 about to be 53.   Don't look it, don't feel it, don't act it.   I don't believe I got that handbook that others have gotten that tell one what one is supposed to be at 20, 30, 40, 50 and so on.

I don't feel as if I have missed out because of it.

Cool

I'm 53. It seems to me, based on the triathlons I've done that the 50-54 age group is very competitive.  Some of these guys amaze me.

I have never made 160k in a year.  Doing what I do, Land Surveying. To make that much I would never have time to train!

I've been married for 35 years. My wife is kind of supportive.  She runs and bikes with me but does not push herself like I tend to do.  So she thinks I am too competitive and gets tired of me training so much.

Thirty-something here.

I lived in DC for a while and I found all the young singles worked on Capital Hill.  Felt like an extension of college.  I had a blast!

1. Age- I'm 43 and I've noticed that the W 40-44 is a pretty competitive AG.  I guess it's the fact that for most women with kids, this is the time frame where the kids are more independent and mommy can focus on training.  I really don't know since I'm blissfully child-free.
2. Income- No way I'm making what the "average" triathlete makes on a teacher's salary.  Laughable!
3. My husband races too; he's doing his first IM in September.  I have noticed that in our tri club, there are a lot of married couples.  Proabably more married couples than singles or one spouse that races and one that does not.  I think it's just easier if both train; that way there are fewer arguments about time and money spent.

Have to compete in the 40-44 group this year.

Not even close to that income level. Though I heard that income level was attributed to Ironman competitors, which is a whole different group than the average triathlon competitor.

I'm 25, but I started tri's at 19 (after freshman year in college).

I'm also married, and way, way, wayyyyy below that $160k mark you mentioned.

In the years I've been training/racing, the demographic has been getting progressively younger. When I first started racing in the 20s age group, I won multiple AG titles for being the only one to show up! But that, sadly for me, has changed.

62 years old, but feel at least 15 years younger.  I'm retired and living on Social Security, so thanks to all those who are generously adding to the fund.  Laughing

160K....that's not even remotely close to being in my galaxy!  Surprised

1.  I just turned 38, but because of those silly tri rules, I'll have 39 all over my calves next year.

2.  I think the races can get pricey, especially if you travel for them.  But very doable for those of us earning under $160k per year (thank God!).

3.  Single.  When I'm training hard, and working 50+ hours a week, it's hard to find the time to meet people and socialize.  I'd like to see a singles triathlon!
