thecatch83 - 2010-12-27 9:14 PM IMO this is way too much mileage and as others have stated, an injury waiting to happen.  The days of logging high mileage like the 70's-80's is over and there are numerous elite athletes who have seen significant gaines using the less is more approach...
Tell this to the African runners. I think they would disagree.

You may disagree, but 100 miles/week is pretty much standard training for world class marathon runners.

What elite athletes are you talking about? What distances are they running/racing?

This was just one of many training routines I have found for advanced runners.  Notice the max mileage in a week for marathon training is only 60 miles per week.

Yet another plan that only builds up to 60 miles per week for a sub 3 hour marathon.  I don't  know what your definition of elite is, but anyone who can run a high 2 hour marathon is elite in my book (including pro triathletes who at their best run 2:45+ marathons at IM distance).  This is a beginner triathlete forum, we are not pros and I could care less what the kenyon's are doing, or how many miles Ryan Hall is logging with Meb at 5,000 feet in Mammoth!

I am amused that Runner's World is calling itself the worldwide authority on running.

Why not look at the Running Times advanced marathon plan?

Or Lydiard's plan?

Does high mileage always work? Nope. But for most of the people who run lower mileage, they have years of experience, and that can go a long way. Your performance now isn't just dictated by what you did last week, last month, or the last 6 months. It is affected by what you've been doing for the last two years. Steady, consistent training over the course of years is the key to success. Mileage is secondary to that.

If you can only do 50 miles a week, do it. But do it every week.

Most of the Runners World staff consists of "Elite" runners, and prior champions..........

I know this. That doesn't make them the worldwide authority, however.

Anyone have experience with this?  I am going to try it for the first time this week, basically 14-15 miles a day.  I figure this is the last week of 2010 and want to accomplish one last thing before the year ends.  I've never got up to 100 miles in a week before so any advise would be appreciated.  Keep in mind I'm not doing any other training this week, just running. Gracias.

Nothing in your logs. Hard to say if it's a good idea for you or not.

80 miles down with today and tomorrow left to go.  Kind of sucks though since I have resorted to running outside and not on the treadmill.  The belt on my treadmill in the basement broke around mile 60 and have been doing the rest of the running on the 1 mile loop on the street in my neighborhood.  Kind of a bummer not to accomplish what I wanted to do which was 100 miles on the treadmill in a week while not listening to music or watching tv just looking at an unfinished basement wall and focusing on my breathing and running form.  O well, there is always next year to try again.  I must say this whole week has been surreal, I've got into such a zone where I really feel weird if I am not running.  Hardest part might have been running this morning's 5 miles in a complete downpour with lightening everywhere and hardly any visability.  Lucky there are hardly any cars that drive through my neighborhood, so the fog wasn't an issue.  The weather siren that started to go off at mile 1.5 kind of woke me up though.  Happy New Years all!

I'm sorry, but 100 miles of running in a week on a treadmill, though difficult, is just not 100 miles of running. Since your machine fell apart on you after 60 miles and you've progressed to actual running, my suggestion is to continue in that mode for however many days you need to finish a week of non-treadmill running and see if you can log 100 miles that way. That is, if your body can handle it.

I am no coach or expert but I would think that doing 3 small runs a day for 7 days is not necessariy going to injure you.  Now if you jumpt to 100 miles and stayed there it might wear on you.  But one time I can't imagine it would cause irreversable damage.

If I tried it on my 15-20 miles a week it might be a problem though.
