Member 78 | Subject: Peroneal tendonitis I was just diagnosed with peroneal tendonitis. For those of you who have had it, I was wondering what your experience was. What symptoms did you have? What was the treatment? What activities stopped during the treatment? For me, I have a lot of pain behind my outside ankle bone and swelling. It's been going on since September or so, but I ignored it so I could finish the tri season. I know--not the best idea. Now, it wakes me up at night. |

Veteran 190 Lakeville, Minnesota | Subject: RE: Peroneal tendonitis If you haven't had an MRI you should ask for one. I messed around with pain in the same area (between outside ankle bone and achilles tendon) from Sep to Dec, went to physical therapist three times a week, stopped running and biking with no improvement. Finally went to a sport clinic had an MRI and found the Peroneal Brevis tendon was torn. Surgery last Jan and able to start training again about mid April. This year I'm training for IM Moo. Good Luck, you can pm me if you have any questions. Mike |

Member 78 | Subject: RE: Peroneal tendonitis I haven't had an MRI. I had a similar story as yours with a shoulder problem a few years ago. After months of PT and no improvement, I got an MRI, a tear was found, and I had surgery. After that, I vowed to get an MRI right away if I ever had another injury. |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Peroneal tendonitis I have it right now. I mostly have pain on the outside of my foot from the arch back, but I also have some pain around the ankle bone. I'm doing PT and massage therapy for it. The massage is helping more than the PT, quite honestly, because there is a lot of swelling left in my foot. The massage has helped get the fluid out and reduce the swelling. After two weeks of PT and massage, I'm doing a lot better, but still have some pain. I have a follow-up tomorrow to decide if I'm getting an MRI or not. Edited by Artemis 2011-01-19 11:47 AM |

Do you wear orthodics? How has it affected your activity level? |

Expert 939 Tulsa | Subject: RE: Peroneal tendonitis My dr. gave me some stong anti-inflamitory drugs to take for a week to get the inflamation out. I didn't run for 2 weeks and it was gone. Before that i had bad pain in the outside of my foot and some towards the middle on the bottom. The anti inflam with the no running really took care of it. |

Subject: RE: Peroneal tendonitis I had peroneal tendonopathy, which was complicated by the fact that I only have a brevis (the longus was used to repair a torn TFL years ago). Thus, it was really important that I get it healed correctly, as I only have one This injury takes a looooong time to heal. I would estimate 3 months easy. During that time, I had lots of PT - mostly getting in there and breaking up scar tissue, for me - and sis lots of rehab on my own, consisting of strengthening the surrounding muscles with one leg stands, lunging on one leg, stretching of the calves, etc.etc. That may have been unique tom my situation, but this is really one you have to be patient with good luck eta - yes, you should also have a proper diagnosis with an MRI, which I did as well Edited by ChrisM 2011-01-19 12:12 PM |

He is now recovering from his surgery. Get an MRI.....and best of luck to you! |

I do not wear orthotics, but I do run in stability shoes. As far as training, I'm allowed to run until my foot starts to hurt, which is about 20-25 minutes right now. |

Member 78 | Subject: RE: Peroneal tendonitis I had an MRI today and already got the report, which I can't really understand. Here's a summary: - Mild to moderate tendinopathy and moderate tenosynovits of the peroneal brevis and longus tendon fibers with areas of intrasubstance longitudinal splitting and partial-thickness tear - Mild posterior tibial tendinopahty and tenosynovitis - Mild chronic generalized thinning of the anterior talobibular and calcaeofibular ligaments I like the use of the word "mild", but the tearing part concerns me. I have an appt with my orthopedic doc on Monday. If anyone has any insight, I'd appreciate it! Thanks!! |
