It's looking as though I will be representing my company (actually I will be competing for my hotel against another hotel in our management portfolio) in a race this August at Copper Mtn Ski Resort Colorado.  I'm from the midwest and am a little concerned of racing in the higher altitude.

Can anyone let me know what I might experience and if there is a way to train in Chicago for the higher altitude.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Tell your boss you need to go up there 2 weeks early to give your company the best chance of success. I'm sure he'll go for it.

This.

Or wear a plastic bag over your head when you train.

Are you talking about the copper triangle?  Hubby did it last year and said it was a blast. However, he trained all summer for it and we live in the mountains at 7200' so he did not have the problem you will face.  He is doing it again this year with a friend from Texas who will try and visit several days early to acclimate.

I would suggest coming up as early before the race as you can.  In the meantime - hills, hills, hills (or even better mountains if available)! This tour is the real deal and will eat you up if not prepared!

Train to be better than you need to be at sea level and then expect to be worse than you thought at altitude.

The boss/2 weeks thing. There is no preparation for high altitude, even more so than there is no preparation for hills. Running up a few flights of stairs can leave you gasping and gassed at altitude. Train as hard as you can. You will surely suffer. When I moved to Albuquerque, and then Santa Fe, New Mexico, and then spent some time in Aspen, riding, running, and such, I can tell you that your lungs will burn, and you will need to slow down/rest often.

Run with a snorkel in your mouth. Should be about the same.

If the boss won't spring for sending you to Colorado 2 weeks early, see if the company will get you one of these.

I'm curious which race you are doing in August?  Cycling?  Running?  Anyway, there really is not a lot you can do as far as altitude goes.  My suggestion is to find out the course profile and if it's hilly (probably is...train hills.  Train for the course you will be racing on.  When you get to high altitude...hydrate!  Even if you are not thirsty drink lots of water.

BTW...last summer a friend of mine came out from Seattle to run Pikes Peak Ascent with me.  He did not do any training at altitude but trained on hills.  He finished the race in a very respectable time...about 20-minutes faster than I did.  And I did all my training at altitude.
