Wbarabas - 2011-03-31 1:22 PM Planning on this being my first OWS.  Is there plenty of support on the lake in case someone should need it?

Start 2 Finish puts ont he Memphis in Mat Tri and they always have plenty of support in the water should you need it. Good luck and have fun!  OWS is the best!

P.S. MIM is a time trial start, so that may take some of the anxiety out of it being an OWS.

The MIM Sprint will be my first tri.  All registered and ready to go.  Now I just have to get down to Wynne for an ows after my wetsuit comes in the first of May.

I have heard rumors that the man made lake we will be swimming in is only around 5-6 foot deep, and if this is true, than there is a good possibility that the swim will not be a wetsuit swim!

any idea if its murky?  I think it was still pretty well below wetsuit legal last year, but that lake was much deeper than 5-6 feet.

If anyone from nashville is going i'm still hoping to carpool with someone to cut the gas cost

Actually, last year was right at the cutoff for wetsuit legal.  I swam the practice swim without a wetsuit b/c I thought it was going to be a non-wetsuit race.  As far as how murky the water is, I am not sure, but I thought I heard somewhere that it was a spring fed lake.  If that is the case, I would have to think it has to be better than the lake used in the past.

I'm registered for the OLY.

I have no wetsuit, and 66 is a bit chilly for these parts.  Last year was right on the cutoff, and the water actually felt nice to me without a wetsuit (I did the sprint, so didn't feel the need to spend the money last year).

I wonder if it will warm enough before May 22.

My guess is that it will. I would bet it would be at or above the temperature cutoff for wetsuits, due to the shallow lake.

According to the S2F website, it is still scheduled as planned.  I sent an e-mail off to Daniel, but haven't heard anything back yet. The website says that all race activties are on the opposite side of the levy from the river.

got this email today. If you haven't booked, better do so quickly:

Memphis in May Triathlon Weekend Flooding Issues and Race Update

We want to make everyone aware of the latest news pertaining to the Memphis in May triathlon venue, courses, and race details.

First and foremost, the 2011 Memphis in May Triathlon weekend is still ON! Although experts expect flooding of the Mississippi River to affect Tunica County, all of our areas of use are fully expected to remain unharmed. We are in consistent communication with Harrah's Resort and Tunica County officials. Both resort and county officials are in 100% favor of us proceeding with the event.

All race activities are on the opposite side of the levy from the rising Mississippi River. The race expo, transition area, and all race lodging will remain open at Harrah's Resort. All casinos in Tunica County are closed at this time (including Harrah's Casino) and are expected to remain closed until after the our event. If you reserved a room at a casino or hotel not associated with the race, chances are they have called you to tell you they are closing and your rooms have been canceled. There are still a very limited amount of rooms left at the Harrah's Hotels. The ONLY way to reserve one of these rooms at the $89 discounted rate is by following the link on the Memphis in May Triathlon website. Here is the direct link to reserve your rooms. *If you call to make reservations, you will NOT recieve the discounted rate*

Given the fact that most casinos will remain closed during the event, there will be a liminted amout of dining options around the race venue. We are still offering pre-race dinner buffets for the first 200 people who register for Friday and Saturday evenings. To register, click here. For a list of other local dining options in the area please visit www.tunicatravel.com

We will continue to monitor the situation and bring you the latest news regarding the Memphis in May Triathlon Weekend. We will continue to post updates to our webstite, and on our facebook and twitter pages.

Again, the Memphis in May Triathlon Weekend is still ON! We look forward to seeing you at the race.

This will be my first tri. I am registered for the sprint and am kind of worried about the swim. Does anyone know what the start will be like?

Anyone want to get a group together for an OWS on the race course?

We can give some valuable info to others like water temp/ depth/ clarity

time trial start, so it will not be bad. Water temps are already mid 60s I hear. This lake is only about 5-6 deep so it will not take much to warm it up. I would be prepared for it to not be wetsuit legal. Good luck and I hope you have a great race!

Nice! I was getting worried as I am trying to pinch pennies and am going no wetsuit. Thanks for the update.

Is the lake in Lakeland open to the public for OWS practice?

the way it is right now over there you could probably practice OWS down Bealle street.. i'd be curious to see some photos of the transition area, etc. Hope it all drains off soon, dealing with the floods here in Nashville last year, I can sympathize with what they're going through.

So can I get a report on what the conditions are like.....3 of us are coming down from Wisconsin and not having been to Tunica but seeing all the pictures we are concerned about travel, road conditions, food, water etc.  Maybe I am going a bit overboard   But any info from those of you closer to the race would be so much appreciated!!!

We are going to be driving down Thursday and we are staying at on of the on-site hotels.

Thanks!
