Subject: Then & Now...how have you improved?

After reading Autumn's last race report and Marmadaddy's analysis of her improvement in a year (awesome improvement BTW), I thought this would be a great thread and very motivating to newbies and those more experienced a like to see how we have improved. Often we don't see how we have really improved.

It would be fun to share your times at your first Tri or a Tri last year and compare to a similar length Tri's time this year and see how your times have improved and post.

My first Tri was 9/04
Swim: 3:37/100 yds
Bike: 12.6 mile/hour
Run: 13.08 minute/mile

Same Tri 7/05
Swim: 2:32/100 yds
Bike: 16.99 mile/hour
Run: 11:51 minute/mile

To compare improvement I look at it as a percentage of time:
Swim: 42% faster (217 seconds/152 seconds)
Bike: 34% faster
Run: 13% faster

Transitions:
T1 1:20 this year, 2:56 last year
T2:  :47 this year, 1:45 last year

For me just finishing last year was a victory. Since I had been out of shape for more than a decade and slow, it is easier to make great strides and improvements. I'd love to see how others have improved. It helps motivate all of us. I'd love to see people who have been doing Tris over many years show progess over the years.

Tinfoilman Tri (1st tri) on 10/04

  • 825 yd swim = 19:42
  • T1 = 2:37
  • 12 mi bike = 42:31
  • T2 = 1:07
  • Run = 36:14
  • Total = 1:42.10

Firecracker Tri on 7/3/05 (same course)

  • Swim = 19:04
  • T1 = 1:20
  • Bike = 38:29
  • T2 = 0:53
  • Run = 30:07
  • Total = 1:28.10

Deltas and % improvement

  • Swim = 0:38 faster = 3.3%
  • T1 = 1:17 faster = 58%
  • Bike = 4:02 faster = 10%
  • T2 = 0:15 faster = 26%
  • Run = 6:07 faster = 20%
  • Total = 12:06 faster = 16%

LOL!  My best improvement was in the transition areas.  But of the 3 sports, my run improved best.  My first tri I had to walk during the run, and the last one I ran the entire thing.  I like that they have 3 races a year on the same course, so that I can compare numbers like this and see the improvement.  Hopefully I'll keep improving next year!

okay, here are mine.

1st tri ever: brewhouse short course aug 04 (528 yard swim, 10.3 mile bike, 2.5 mile run)
Swim: 13:05 (2:29 /100yards), t1 3:20, Bike 36:05 (17.13 mile/hr), t2 3:00, Run 28:16 (11:19 min/mile)

1st sprint this year: minneman sprint july 05 (528 yard swim, 13 mile bike, 3 mile run)
Swim: 8:54 (1:41 /100yards), t1 2:42, Bike 41:09 (18.96 mile/hr), t2 1:37, Run 26:34 (8:52 min/mile)

most recent: brewhouse long course aug 05 (1450 yard swim, 20.6 mile bike, 5 mile run)
Swim: 30:47 (2:07/100yards), t1 2:28, Bike 1:04:07 (19.28 mile/hr), t2 2:29, Run 45:40 (9:08 min/mile)

the run is where i have improved the most. i've gotten faster, but more importantly, i actually LIKE running now! i even had a dream the other night that i was on a trail run. i didn't get to do any trail running in duluth this past weekend since i was racing, and i was bummed! that is a huge change from how i felt most of last year. i think it was in early september last year that i really started to enjoy running. i was in love by the time i did my first 10k last october.

i've also lost close over 40 lbs over the last year and a half. i didn't want to weigh myself before, and it was in the 190s when i did. i was right around 190 when i started running in february 2004. i finally started logging my weight and measurements in mybodycomp in september of last year. here are some of the changes between 9/04 and 8/05: Weight -29.92; Waist -6.46; Abdomen -6.94; Hips -2.94;Thigh -2.97

so, i'm 80% of the person i used to be. 22% faster in the run, 50% faster on the swim, 12% faster on the bike. and, 100% healthier and happier (okay, maybe 99%...the stress of race fees does take its toll!).

On august 7th I went back to the course I did last year. It was my first tri ever. (750/20/5)

Last year, I toed the start line in baggy swim trunks, hoping for a sub 23 minute swim, wishing that I knew how to swim freestyle and didn't have to do back stroke. I finished the swim in 22:32, 173 out of 185, last in my age group by over 11 minutes.
This year, I toed the start line in a sleek, one piece trisuit, hoping for a sub 15 minute swim. I was able to sit back in the swim, not push hard, draft behind for a 15:05 swim. It was good enough for 84th out of 204, still last in my age group, but only down by 5 minutes this time.
Last years bike, I was riding on Sora derailers, cage pedals and without a cycling computer. I rode them to a 44:15, 27.1 km/h time, good enough for 89th place overall. I was second last in my age group, 89th overall.
This years bike, I was riding an aero frame, ultegra compenents, syntace aero bars and some very well used clipless pedals. I worked that setup to a 14th place overall, in 36:26, good for second in my age group.
Last years run, in 40 dollar running shoes, brought me home in 98th place overall, with a steady time of 22:50(good for 36th overall). I finished the course in 1:29:36, to a chearing section that was shocked at how well I did.
This years run, I had $160 dollar shoes on my feet, and wanted a top ten, sub 20 minute time. Let downs happen, and only finished in 20:47, good for the 15th best run time, second in AG(only the guy who won overall was better on the bike/run) and 23rd overall with a time of 1:12:16.
In one calender year(with basketball and volleyball season replacing any form of winter training), I was went from a BOP to being within 7 minutes of the lead, a turn around of 17 minutes.
Can't wait to get my swim coach!

Boulder Peak 2004 1500 Meter swim/26 mile bike/ 10 k

swim 36 minutes
bike 1:30
Run 70 minutes
Overall 3:20

Boulder Peak 2005

Swim 29 minutes
bike 1:20
Run 58 minutes
Overall 2:52

Not blazing fast but an improvement from 1150/1350 to 556/1350. The winner was a speedy 1:55. I am just not sure how that is possible.

More importantly the training has helped me shed over 25 lbs and I look like I have lost more than that due to the loss of fat/gain in muscle.

I am very proud and hope to learn how to really run this winter so I can do even better next year!

Congratulations to everyone   I haven't really improved that much.  I haven't been able to work my weakest event for 6 months of my one year of doing tris tho due to various and sundry injuries.  My bike speed in my first race was around 18 MPH and in my last race (on my own bike ) 20 MPH.  My swim is about the same.  I do well in  a wetsuit tho

I've done two tri's - both of them were about 750m swim, 30k bike, 7.5k run

June: 1:27/100m swim - 10:57
T1- 1:30
biking - 31.5km/hr
T2 - 1:00
running - 5:37min/km

July: 1:31/100m swim
T1 - 1:33
biking - 30.4km/hr
T2 - 0:48
running - 4:33km/hr (and that was the big difference in my times!!)

Other notables:
two years ago, I could go 800m in the pool in 8 min, 46 seconds... sigh
two years ago, I could do a half assed bike up a hill and die
two years ago, I couldn't run 7.5km

My first sprint tri was in May and my second was this past weekend.  Overall I went from 1:42:19 to 1:28:17, with the greatest improvement in cycling.  Funny how focused training can have an impact!  My next focus needs to be on the swim, so I can report even faster times in my next race!

First race (sprint) Last year (8/5/04) Total Time was 1:14:08

Most recent race (same course, 8/11/05). Total time was 1:04:45

So in almost a year I've improved on the same course by 12.6%.

well, I'm really just starting out, about 2 weeks of training from almost a dead stop.. But this morning I had a GREAT ride!! I feel like I am starting to "get it" on the bike.. With more endurance and cardiovascular ability I'll be doing well...

Swimming and running not quite there yet, but working on it!

Me so jealous. For me, I am just feeling better overall. More energy during the day, more in control of my body. I picked up a new sport (cycling) which I really enjoy. It's only week 2. Can't wait to report my progress after 1 full month!

Nope.  I've been out there training, and I've had friends that have done it.  Some of them are scary fast, but their times on that course were always like an hour over their PB times - I'm frankly, not in good enough shape to finish it.
