Pre-race routine:

None. Expensive training day, but Dr. Joe talked me into signing up for a base workout. Overall a good idea to break up the training routine and have an early season fitness test. It's the end of week 3 of my 20 week IM plan. It was perfect weather conditions, high 50s and overcast.

Race not until 1pm, so got plenty of calories in early for breakfast. Had a GU 30 minutes before race start.
Event warmup:

Comments:

Goal today was a base training workout and fitness test. Joe talked me into keeping a 9:30 pace, which was what I should do to stay in upper Z2, but I would have pushed it more if it weren't for him. So I set my goal to keep that pace until last 5k, then I would see what I could do from there and just have fun with it. The gun went off and I hit my garmin as we crossed the start line, Joe thought they should have started us with a canon since we were in Williamsburg running the Colonial Half. I pretty much stuck to this plan and it worked out well. Picked up a running buddy who wanted to pace off us since I had a garmin, so he stuck with us/me until mile 10. I was announcing our pace each mile to keep them from asking me. Joe stuck with me for first 8 miles, then faded back at a water station. I thanked volunteers along the way. Then sticking to my plan I turned it up at mile 10. It was hard picking up speed, but a few downhills helped out. I felt strong for last 5k and passed a ton of runners/walkers. Calves started to tweek a little going up the hills towards the end, but never materialized into anything thankfully.
What would you do differently?:

Take more calories and maybe my hand bottle that I brought with carbo pro, but left in the car.
Post race
Warm down:

None.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really, exited training run plan. I would have liked a few more calories on course, only served water at a few points and I only took one gel with me on course at about mile 7.

Event comments:

Got 2 beer tickets, almost missed out on free shirt, but young lad sitting with us after race didn't get one before the race either and he went over and picked us all up one. I gave him some free beer tickets and thanked him. Everyone kept giving us their beer tickets, but after 3 I was feeling silly, so we went to car and Joe's family was waiting for us and drove us to BK for a quick post race double cheeseburger, fries and coke. Then drove to Joe's house and sat in his hot tub for 20 mins. Great day.

Fantastic news.  In addition to a good training run and the ability to "feel" the pace, you were able to get the sense of picking up the pace.  It may not be muscle memory training just yet...but it is a good feeling to have way down in your pain locker the memory of being able to pick up the pace for a solid 25 minutes.

Congratulations.

Fabulous race given the plan.  The fact that I don't see the word "hip" once in this report is just awesome news!  Great recovery.
