On these country roads that I ride on, folks can come up on you all of a sudden around a curve. I need to be able to hear them immediately and get over. I don't by this argumentĀ at all. It would preclude deaf people from riding. The big difference is that deaf people don't have a choice. My argument is that using headphones adds another, unnecessary, level of risk to an activity that already includes a fair ammount of risk by its nature. FWIW, I have ridden with deaf (or rather extremely hearing impared) cyclists with a Team In Training group. I saw this woman come within a gnat's hair of getting smeared across the road by a minivan because she was not aware it was behind her. It really drove home the point to me. I understand that she has since started riding with a mirror and being even more careful. I cannot imagine that anyone would voluntarly place themselves in a position similar to hers for a benefit that's as trivial as listening to music while riding. One can listen to music virtually any time |
