Hey eveyone,

Just debating with myself on something. Right now I am in between jobs and don't have a lot of expendable funds... I do have a little stash of cash on the side that i've had for a while, but not really willing to spend the money to do both. Anyway, im debating on whether to join a tri club with the funds or invest in a heart rate monitor.

A heart rate monitor would be great and I have no doubt would greatly benefit my training, but the training tips and community of a tri club would be nice too... Not too sure which to opt for. I will likely either join the club later in the season or buy a monitor later on. Its just a matter of which one first.

Any opinions on the matter?

If you are without a job and you can afford it... do anything you can to make contact with other people who share you interests.  That may help you get a job.

Agreed.  In this economy, networking is important.  (If you can spare the cash)..  BT Is my Triathlon club..

My run club has done far more to benefit my running than my heart rate monitor ever did.  And I no longer wear the HRM but I run with my club 2-4 days per week.

If the costs are equal I vote for the tri club.  Other people have so much to share and it's very motivating wearing a club shirt at a race.  Our club had training rides over the winter and transition clinics.  Really helpful.

Agreed on the club. Heck, you may be able to get an old HRM off a new teammate for free. Then, you get both!

Agreeing with everyone above as well. Teammates can do so much more than tell you if you are on target with your HR. A great witnessing opportunity as well :-)

Praise Jesus !!!

That, and...

don't get just a HR monitor.  Might as well get a Garmin GPS with HR.  You can pick up a 305 for pretty cheap- I think $130 with a HR monitor.  Probably less if you get one used or refurbished.

If you have to choose, I would vote tri club.

But before you dish out any money...I would search for free training groups.  Go to your local running or bike shop and ask around.  Not everyone trains with a offical club with dues.  I don't.  And 90% of the people I know in the sport don't either.

When I first got started, I used google to find local group rides.  I emailed the ride leader, and showed up and simply introduced myself asking to tag along.  Now I train with that group 3x a week and about 15 of us are all doing the same HIM this summer.  Haven't paid a dime in club dues.
