Subject: Attacked by Pit Bull

Was out for a ride today when attacked by a Pit Bull.  A family was standing out in their front yard with this dog when it took off after me.  I was going up a hill into a 30mph head wind so there was no out running the dog.  I was praying the owners would be able to stop the dog but no dice.  To be honest with you it didn't appear they made much of an attempt.  He knocked me off my bike and latched onto my thigh and just started shaking his head back and fourth.  I was hitting the dog on the head and one of the owners finally made it over there and started kicking the dog.  They finally got the dog off me.  Some old couple driving by witnessed the entire thing and loaded up my bike in their truck and drove me to the emergency room.  Ended up with a nice big hole in my leg that had to be stiched up.  What really pisses me off is I found out that the dog has bitten several people in the past.

I'm currently done running for 4 weeks due to an injury and know I can't swim for 12 days because of the stiches.  I haven't got a chance to look over my bike real well I'm hoping it's not jacked up were I can't ride for awhile too.

Ouch!  Sorry to hear that.

I came very close to having to shoot one last weekend in a similar situation.  I have no patience for people who don't keep dangerous dogs confined.

Oh my - so sorry to hear this!  Sending you quick recovery vibes.

That just sounds terrible, and very irresponsible of the owners.  I hope you were/are able to file a police report!  That sounds like a very dangerous situation, and who knows, it could be a child next....

My brother in law had a similar experience last summer.  I hope you heal quickly and take action to ensure this doesn't happen again.  I'm sorry it was you, but if it were a child it could have had a tragic ending.

When I heard the dog had bitten other people I decided to press charges on the owner. I have a 11 y/o daughter who sometimes rides with me and my wife. It scares me to think what this dog would have do to her.

My wife and I have worked as dog trainers in fact owned a business doing it. Both have worked a human society and had to put dogs down. Nothing makes me more furious than low life douche bags like the ones who own that dog. Not only did there behavior create that monster but there total lack of responsabilty in containing it. I lived in Denver for a few years and the reason it is illegle to own a pitbull pure or mixed is because of garbage like them. Unfortunatley the only solution will likely be termination of this creature which is tragic. Obviously the owners can't be trusted to protect the public and the dog will never change under there care. Thank god it wasn't an 8 year old girl like the one killed here last summer in a similer situation. I am so sorry to hear about your injuries I hope you heal quickly. I also hope this menace is dealt with. Best wishes and good luck.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.  I rode today and was chased by no less than 10 dogs. Two of these were Pits, one was a rottweiler.  Some were just coming out to greet and run along, which is dangerous enough in itself. But the pits and rot were out for blood.   This is a route that I ride often. Last year there were only about 4 that would chase you. I carried pepper spray and was able to soak three of them.  I have no patience with dogs that are allowed to continuously chase bikers and runners.  I believe they deserve whatever they get (dogs and owners).  If I were you I would not let up on the prosecution. Make them pay.

There was a man attacked and killed by pits in the county that neighbors ours.  The owner has been charged with manslaughter.

Sue their butts - Report it to the police and take them to court.  I have a friend who got a nice settlement for the same type of incident - hope you are better soon!

Be careful not to spray yourself! My cousin did that last year. It was hilarious!  For me anyway, not him.

Wow....sorry about your luck. who cares what people say, sue them...quickly...who cares if the dog had/hadn't bit anyone in the past. If you're going to be a pet owner, you must be a responsible pet owner, regardless of whether you fancy pit bulls or parakeets. The one unfortunate thing, I hope that they had taken out a supplemental insurance policy to cover their pit bull, as it is common practice for homeowners insurance policies to specifically exclude "dangerous breeds" of dogs. By the time all is said and done, your healthcare bills should be paid 100%, your pain/suffering should be duly compensated, and I hope you enjoy your new bike rocking some new zipp fc's....

report the aggressive ones to animal control. Someone may not be able to out ride or out run them one day, you are probably not the only one they chase. You say they chased you more than once??  Once would have been enough for me.

To the OP, sorry to hear about that, i hope you heal quickly!!! Sorry to hear about the incident.

X2....the dog was doing what was his/ her instinct the owners should have known better. I love dogs but some cam be dangerous and unpredictable and should be chained at all times. I had similar issue but it was a smaller dog and I kicked it off me. Some dog owners almost think it's cute they run after us. In your case a lawsuit is in order. Let them learn the hard way!

No. SHOOT THE OWNERS not the dog.  The owners are probably welfare type without a dime to their name so suing will get you barely nothing.  A bullet to the ahead though will be memorable.

Good for you! That dog needs to be put down. Its really a wonder they were able to get it off you. Their jaw strength is pretty much unmatched and they are very dangerous. I would get an attorney. I see people walking these dogs on our local greenway all the time. Alot of kids, elderly people and others on the greenway too. I don't think its safe no matter how much the owners talk about how docile they are.

That is just awful. I get chased by dogs all the time - that is really scary. I hope you heal quickly and get some compensation.

My 8-year-old daughter and I were riding bikes last summer when a dog (looked like some kind of pit mix) started chasing after her.  I was absolutely terrified and felt completely helpless (she was about 30 yards ahead of me).  I'm almost shaking right now thinking about it.  All I could do was yell at the top of my lungs and distract the dog enough to keep it away from her.  I am so thankful nothing bad happened and we're going to keep our rides limited to less rural areas.

I love dogs (and so does my daughter), but that animal (and all those that aggressively chase bikes/runners) needs to be put down, and their owners prosecuted.

I have a feeling the OP isn't going to see a dime from the owners and the local law enforcement won't do much because he's a cyclist.

The dog must go. A little girl was mauled to death in a town near me just a month ago, hopefully you can save someone from that tragedy! I had a parent of a patient call me after their dog bit their daughter in the mouth (she only sustained minor injuries), the father had already "taken care" of the dog....more people should be so responsible! Heal fast and well!!!!

I despise this breed of dog.  Over and over you read reports of Pit Bulls attacking and/or killing humans.

Two years ago 3 pit bulls came into our yard.  They were barking and trying to get at my two golden retrievers who were in our chainlink fence in the back yard.  I sent my daughter out to 'see what our dogs are backing at'.  She yelled back that there were three dogs trying to get in.  I grabbed a shotgun and chambered a round and by the time I got into the backyard, the 3 pit bulls had broken into our backyard by hitting the gate so hard the hinges turned on the post.  They were all three attaking my male golden retriever.  I fired the shotgut in the air and they let my dog go.  I'm a dog lover and could not bring myself to shoot these dogs.  BIG MISTAKE!  I fired again in the air and they ran off.

We called the sherrif's office and they sent a duputy out to investigate.  About an hour late the three dogs broke into another neighbor's yard, the owner was not home.  They killed one of thier dogs and maimed the other one.  They were still in the backyard when the owner got home to find his dogs dead and this 3 pitbulls in his back yard.  He called animal control who came out and shot one the pitbulls, captured one but the other one got away and went back to the owner - my neighbor across the street.  Long legal fight trying to get the owner to get rid of the dog but he neve did.  I think they even gave the other one back to him.

Sorry, to hear about your attack.  Obviously you have a lawsuit.  If the owers have a house, their homeowners policy will settle.  More importantly though, animal control needs to put the dog down.  Each state and county and city have different laws concering dogs so you need to find out what the laws are in your area.

~Mike
