Subject: Wetsuit vs. Non-Wetsuit Swim Test
I had a swim workout planned for today, so I thought I'd do a little test and see what the time difference would be swimming without a wetsuit. Headed off to Walden pond where the distance across and back is pretty darn close to a Half Ironman (1.2 miles...2112 yards). I base that on my average swim time there vs. my average half IM time, and they are within a minute of each other. Normally I swim with an Ironman Stealth sleeveless wetsuit. I didn't wear my HRM today, but since my swim times are usually pretty repeatable (within a minute or so), I went strictly by stroke turnover and rate of perceived effort (RPE).

Normal Wetsuit Time: 37:00 / 38:00 minutes
Non-Wetsuit Time: 43:00 minutes

I was pretty surprised, but then I half expected the results. It was definitely harder, I couldn't relax as much and I was more tired than normal at the end. I'm a middle of the pack swimmer, base on my 19th place out of 43 in my age group at IMLP. Losing 5-6 minutes for a 1/2 IM is pretty significant. I figure that it would have cost me even more over the full IM distance, because I definitely would have been more tired. I might have been looking at a 13:00 / 15:00 minute loss for the 2.4 mile distance.

I guess the bottom line is, for me anyway, that anything over the Sprint distance is worth using a wetsuit, since the time lost in transition would be more than offset in the water. And I'd feel less tired getting on the bike. For the Sprint distance, maybe I'd lose a minute or so? Kind of a toss up as to whether it's worth it. Otherwise, it looks like the bottom line is "Get all the flotation you can afford!"

Well, this should be pretty easy to figure out. You're 6 minutes faster at 2112 yards (1.2 mi). For a 400 yard sprint, that's 1:08 minutes faster using a wetsuit.

It shouldn't take you more than 30 seconds to get out of your wetsuit in T1 (hopefully less), so you should be 40+ seconds faster using a wetsuit in a sprint.

When you think about how much effort it takes to catch someone who is 40 seconds ahead on the bike or the run, this should be a no brainer!

Hi Max,  thank you for doing that test!  although I'm sure the results aren't specific to all of us, it's neat to have an idea of how much difference the wetsuit really makes.

Personally, I always use one just for the "warm fuzzy" I get from feeling a little protected from the elements and the added flotation.

Geez just think.. When you qualify for Hawaii... You can't wear a wetsuit.. That sucks. Good info. Enjoyed.

interesting... I wonder if there'd be much difference in time between sleeveless versus sleeved wetsuit

The only test I've seen is at http://www.bikesportmichigan.com/features/wetsuit.shtml

Here are the results:

2.4 mi swim, 3 consecutive days

No wetsuit: HR=167, time=1:28:37
Sleeveless wetsuit: HR=162, time=1:14:00
Full wetsuit: HR=154, time=1:09:07

Interesting that speed increases and heart rate decreases as you go from no wetsuit to a sleeveless to a fullsuit. Obviously this is anecdotal evidence, but it's the best I've seen, anyway.

For me, there would be a much bigger difference between no wetsuit and wearing a wetsuit, because I'm not really a swimmer.

Great test, Max. Thanks for sharing!

I have worn my suit (QR Hydrofull) in all my races (5 sprints) and most of my OW swims. However, the past week I've been doing my OW swims "naked" in case they don't let us wear them a the Cranberry (my 1st OLY). I have to say that there is a big difference, for me, between the effort without the suit -vs- w/ it. But, if they do let swear them, I should be in good shape for the bike because of the time I've put in the water without it.

My recommendation--not that it's worth much--is: if you are a beginner and you have a wetsuit, wear it in your races, no matter what the distance! It makes a difference!

Thanks again Max.

I did a similar test in a pool. I was 8sec faster/100yd with a swim suit.
