Total Time = 2h 34m 28s
Overall Rank = 115/435
Age Group = M 40-44
Age Group Rank = 16/66
Pre-race routine:

Drove down to my parents house the night before to spend the night. Kids stayed with them while Sam, Dog and I drove to beautiful Bumpass VA.

Ate bowl of oatmeal, and made our way down. 10am start so we got to sleep in a bit.
Event warmup:

Picked up packet, went to bathroom, dropped stuff off at transition, went back to car to get out of pouring rain.
Swim
  • 34m 40s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started front row, took off, feeling good. Swallowed a lot of water due to waves. Rounded first buoy ok, somehow kept going out wider and wider.

At one point it seemed like I was right next to the buoys then I seemed to be 200 yards away from them. Made the last big turn extremely wide. Pretty sure I swam close to 2000M
What would you do differently?:

Not sure if it was current/waves/etc or my own stupidity for being so outside the line, but that probably cost me quite a bit of time here.
Transition 1
  • 02m 49s
Comments:

Long run out of transition to bike mount, not sure where this stopped/started
Bike
  • 1h 07m
  • 24 miles
  • 21.49 mile/hr
Comments:

I thought I rode a pretty good race here. Passed lots and lots of people. Ended up yelling at a lot of people out there. Not sure why so many felt they should be riding in the left hand side of the lane.

Slightly disapointed in my avg watts here I thought I would be a bit higher. Not sure where exactly the bike timing started, there was a very long run up a muddy hill to the bike mount, that might have eaten into the time/watts.

TSS: 105
IF: .98
NP: 228
AP: 214
What would you do differently?:

Ride harder I guess
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

when I jumped off my bike my feet were completely numb. Actually running through the ankle high mud helped warm them up a bit before putting my shoes on. Took some time to wipe the heavy mud off my feet before putting my running shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

Not race when it's raining.
Run
  • 48m 16s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I thought I actually did a pretty good run off the bike for me. Usually my run's stink. This one wasn't great but better than most. One section of the run went through a trail that was extremely slippery, maybe 1/4 mile of it. Was worried I was going to pull something or fall face first in the mud.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder
Post race
Warm down:

Finished then saw Sam and Chloe, we picked up a nasty pizza and I ate it and drank some water. Picked up stuff and headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I have been focusing more on bike racing this year and not as much on tri's but this was still my best time in an oly by over 9 minutes so that's a good thing. Even if I swam my best it wouldn't have put me on the podium here so all and all a good effort all around.

Event comments:

Pretty good race for setup. Everything was well marked. Lots of volunteers and aid stations. That bit of the run through the woods in the mud probably needed to be re-routed this year due to rain. Also since i'm being picky I would rather have fruit after a race than a Poppa John's pizza I think.

Great job!

Don't fret about the watts.

You race for speed, not wattage PR's.  You had a great bike split.

Nice Race Tony..... I think Knoxville is gonna be fun.

I thought it was interesting that you believe your bike power was down and then you fell you had a good run?  Related maybe???   Foot in mouth

Great report and excellent time! I agree with you that the swim was more in the 1750+ range. Long and annoyingly choppy. Still, you had a great bike leg with the strong winds and a good run. Congrats.

Tony nice race, the swim sounded brutal.  The waves suck.  Congrats on the PR, on the first race of the yr!?!  Sounds like it's going to be a great yr for you.
