What is the rule of thumb as far as swimming (indoors) during a storm? I thought I once heard a lifeguard say if you could see lightening out the window, then it was a no.

Anyone?

At my gym they get you out of the pool for 30 minutes if there is thunder or lightning.

I didn't belief it when I read your post but I found this:

http://www.lightningsafety.com/nlsi_pls/indoor_pools.html

So I guess there is something to it.

Basically, its the general gym being overly cautious.  Most have a 'rule' about 30 minutes.  But our pool, we just swim in the inside pool vice the outdoor one, regardless of lighting.

My Gym shuts us down during lightning.  I just got pulled out on Tuesday because of a storm.  ticks me off.

My gym shuts the pool down when it's storming.  I know this cause I couldn't swim the other week, even though I didn't hear or see any lightning (to be fair I basically rolled out of bed and went to try and swim, so maybe it did storm).

Have you ever had a lightening strike knock our your electronics? Lightening, if it is close enough to the structure, can affect things indoors. Like pools. Sure the risk is low, but it is an entirely avoidable one.

My pool shuts down if there is lightening in the air for 30 minutes.

My gym has never shut the pool during a storm...at least in all the years I have been going there.

We pull everyone from the indoor pool if there is lightning. We wait for 30 minutes after the last strike.  The kids hate it because then we do squats, lunges, push ups, etc.

I swim at a Gold;s--they don't do anything, but there's no lifeguards either. When I swam at the JCC, they did close it down (their were lifeguards).

This is one of my pet peeves about the pool on Ft. Hood.  I understand them shutting down when storms roll through but I swear the thing is closed every time there is lighting strike somewhere in Texas.  Seems like it closes half the summer!!

X a zillion on Ft. Hood!  I won't even go if it's sprinkling because the lifeguards have extraordinary hearing, I mean they are amazing!  They can hear thunder that NO ONE else can hear....

This is so stupid.  I looked (and found that others have looked as well) and there isn't evidence of a SINGLE death ever from swimming in an indoor pool and being harmed by lightening.  "We could find no reports of deaths or injuries in indoor pools related to lightning causes," says Richard Kithil of the National Lightning Safety Institute and Kevin Johnston, a senior consultant.  (from http://www.bigeye.com/indoorswimmingpools.htm)

Of course, I suppose you should close the indoor swimming pool if a tiger escapes from the zoo as well.  Tigers have recently been found to be able to swim and sometimes actually hunt from the water, and a Tiger COULD possibly get through a door as someone is leaving.

ours closes during storms.  actually, some mornings if they called for storms the night before pool doode doesn't even bother getting out of bed.  regardless if its raining or not.  i have been in when a storm popped up, but it didn't wake pool doode up so I didn't get kicked out.

Liability, liability, and liability.  Nobody wants to get sued over the outside chance that it does happen. So they err on the side of caution.  I could go on and on about "these days" and society as a whole, but everyone knows already.
