Blue Sky

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 51m 32s
Overall Rank = 440/479
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 22/28
Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:00A; cliff bar, banana and water before leaving the house. I didn't pick up packet before the race so I head to pick up pack as soon as I arrive at 6:30A. Back to car for gear. Gear to transition area; realize that I forgot race belt. Go buy race belt. Set up transition area. Realize I forgot number for helmet in car. Back to car. Back to transition area.

I haven't trained in several weeks for a wide variety of reasons (excuses) so doing the tri was questionable until about 10P the night before, even though I had registered. I was disorganized from the start.
Event warmup:

Checked out the exit and entry points for run and bike. Try and figure out the swim course - oh, now I see that turn bouy 200 meters down the shoreline. Get in water and stroke some to warm up, hoping two weeks with no swimming won't be a problem. Stand around waiting for the start.
Swim
  • 18m 41s
  • 600 meters
  • 03m 07s / 100 meters
Comments:

Time includes a climb out of the water and up a couple of sets of stairs to the transition area. Despite how slow the time is, my best swim time to date. I went out harder than I anticipated, even in the back of the wave. After settling down everything was fine, even saw several yellow caps behind me halfway through the swim, which is unusual. Much more comfortable this time with the waves behind catching up and passing.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, except swim faster.
Transition 1
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

Pretty good transition I thought; no gloves this time, put on helmet, glasses and shoes and go.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Bike
  • 49m 5s
  • 13.7 miles
  • 16.75 mile/hr
Comments:

Lots of bike traffic during parts; tough to sort out; drafting unavoidable - but I didn't see a single marshall on the course. Seemed to be more aggressive riders this time. My best speed to date; I guess so since I thought I was going to puke several times.

When I'm passing (my front wheel even with back wheel of passee), and someone behind calls "on your left" is it my responsibility to drop back or hammer it to pass?

Ride felt pretty good, though I got passed a lot
What would you do differently?:

Don't skip training.
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

A little slow, but ok.
Run
  • 40m 46s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 13m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

My weak link; ran more than walked, but still lots of walking.
What would you do differently?:

Consistent training; seriously train over the winter - I could cut 10 minutes off 5K time by not walking; 20 minutes off of 10K time.
Post race
Warm down:

Grab some water, banana, cookies; walk around to cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pre race training inconsistency.

Event comments:

Blue Sky puts on pretty good events.

Great race! I was there too. The lake water was disgusting. About mile 6 of the bike, I proceeded to coughing for the next 4 miles because I think that I actually had dirt stuck in my throat from the swim. Nasty.

Will be at Tugaloo as well. Maybe we'll run into each other.
